Chapter 7 - Diane's Secret

Ethan wasn't bluffing.

While Mark had been busy playing corporate playboy in Miami, Arthur Vance had spent the past twelve hours digging into the accounts of "Diane’s Haute Couture." What he found wasn't just poor management; it was an active, systematic money-laundering scheme.

In a private conference room at my office, Arthur laid out the evidence before me.

"Diane wasn't just using your trust fund to pay off legitimate debts," Arthur explained, pointing to a series of wire transfers. "For the past three years, Mark has been generating fake consulting invoices from Vance Logistics, routing company cash into Diane’s boutique, and then withdrawing it as 'owner dividends' to pay for his offshore accounts and his girlfriend's lifestyle."

I felt a cold shiver run down my spine. "So Mark was stealing from his own family's company, not just me."

"Exactly. And he made the fatal mistake of listing you as a co-signatory on two of those shell entities without your knowledge. He was planning to set you up as the fall girl when the IRS eventually came knocking."

"That sick bastard," Ethan spat, his jaw clenching. "He was going to send my sister to prison so he could run off to Florida with his mistress."

"Fortunately," Arthur said with a wolfish grin, "Claire never signed those documents. The signature is an obvious forgery, and we have forensic handwriting analysis proving Mark signed your name. I handed the entire file to the IRS Criminal Investigation Division two hours ago."

Right then, my phone buzzed on the table. It was an unknown local number.

I hit speakerphone. "Hello?"

"Claire?"

It was Mark. The arrogance was completely gone. His voice sounded cracked, trembling, broken down to its rawest elements. He sounded like a terrified child.

"Claire, please. You have to answer me. They kicked me out of the firm. My cards are declined. I don't even have enough cash to pay for parking at the garage."

"You have legs, Mark. Walk," I said evenly.

"Claire, listen to me, I’m sorry! Okay? I’m sorry about the beer! I was stressed! I was drunk! Mom is losing her mind—the bank seized her shop this afternoon! You can't let them take everything! We’re married, Claire! For richer or for poorer, remember?"

"You broke that vow the second you put your hands on me, Mark. And you broke it every time you wired my father’s money to Miami."

There was a dead silence on the other end.

"You... you know about Miami?" Mark whispered, his breath catching in his throat.

"I know about Chloe. I know about the condo. And more importantly, the IRS knows about Diane's boutique."

A choked sob escaped Mark's throat. "Claire, please... let's just meet. Just you and me. No lawyers. No Ethan. Just let me explain. If you don't help me, I’m going to prison for ten years!"

I looked at Ethan, then at Arthur. Both shook their heads in silent warning.

I smiled. "A diner. The Silver Diner on Route 1. Tomorrow at noon. Come alone, Mark. If I see anyone else, the deal is off."

I hung up before he could respond.
