Chapter 8 - The Freezing Point

At seven-thirty the following morning, the hammer fell.
Judge Vance—no relation to Marcus, thankfully—signed the emergency order to freeze all domestic and foreign accounts tied to Lauren, Bradley, and Marcus Vance. By nine o’clock, two unmarked squad cars pulled up to the front entrance of the exclusive Oakmont Country Club where Lauren was having an emergency breakfast with her brother.
Jared and I watched from David’s car across the boulevard as two Cook County detectives stepped out onto the polished marble terrace.
Lauren was mid-sentence, waving a mimosa in the air, when the detectives approached her table. We couldn't hear the words, but we watched the exact moment her reality crumbled. The glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the stone patio. Her brother Bradley attempted to stand up and walk away, but an officer grabbed his arm, spun him around, and snapped handcuffs onto his wrists.
Lauren screamed, resisting as they pulled her arms behind her back. Diners at neighboring tables pulled out their smartphones, recording the entire spectacle. The woman who had obsessed over status, reputation, and luxury was being led to a police cruiser in broad daylight, her wrists bound in steel.
“Let’s go, Dad,” Jared said quietly from the front seat. He didn't smile. There was no joy in seeing his life burned to ash, only the quiet relief of an infection finally being cut away.
An hour later, Jared pulled his SUV up to my dingy apartment building. He didn't let me step toward the front stairs. Instead, he grabbed my duffel bag from the back seat.
“You’re never spending another night in this place, Dad,” Jared said firmly.
“Jared, I don't need a fancy hotel—”

“You’re not going to a hotel,” he said, opening the passenger door for me. “We’re going home.”
