Chapter 7 - The Accomplice in the Shadows

Lauren’s parting words hung in the air like a cloud of poison.

*“You have no idea who else signed off on those accounts.”*

David Walsh frowned, adjusting his glasses as he pulled up the full underwriting file for the eight-hundred-thousand-dollar mortgage on Diane’s house. “Wait a minute,” David muttered, clicking through the dense legal PDFs. “The mezzanine lender was a private equity firm out of Chicago called Apex Capital. To secure a loan against a residential property under a disputed power of attorney, Apex required a secondary legal certification from an independent notary and an estate attorney.”

“Who signed it?” Jared asked, stepping over to the computer screen.

David scrolled to the final page of the loan agreement. Beneath Lauren’s signature was an official legal seal and a bold, familiar signature: *Marcus Vance, Esq.*

Jared stumbled back, knocking a coffee cup off the table. It shattered on the floor, brown liquid spilling across the linoleum.

“Marcus?” Jared whispered, his face turning pale. “Marcus is my best friend. He was my best man at our wedding!”

“And he was the lead counsel for Lauren’s boutique investment firm,” I added quietly, the memories flooding back. “Marcus came to Diane’s funeral, Jared. Remember? He brought a casserole to the house. He sat with me in the living room and told me Diane was like a second mother to him.”

Jared looked violently ill. “Marcus has been managing my commercial portfolio for five years. He’s the one who recommended Lauren take over the trust administration so I could focus on my career!”

“It was coordinated from the very beginning,” David said, his fingers flying across the keys. “Marcus was getting a kickback. Look here: within forty-eight hours of the mezzanine loan funding, an entity called ‘Vance Legal Consulting’ received a seventy-five-thousand-dollar ‘advisory fee’ from Lauren’s Cayman account.”

Jared leaned against the wall, breathing hard. The betrayal had expanded beyond his marriage; it had infected his lifelong circle of trust. He had been surrounded by wolves who wore smiles and drank his wine while bleeding his family dry.

“David,” Jared said, his voice trembling with deadly resolve. “Add Marcus Vance to the criminal affidavit. Charge him with conspiracy, wire fraud, and breach of fiduciary duty. I don't care if his father is a federal judge. Burn them all down.”
