Chapter 6 - Midnight Desperation

At two-thirty in the morning, a frantic banging rattled my apartment door.
David looked up from his laptop. Jared tensed, balling his fists.
“Don't open it,” Jared growled.
“No,” I said calmly. “Let her knock. Let’s see what she has to say when the walls are closing in.”
I walked to the door and unlocked the deadbolt. Lauren pushed her way inside immediately, smelling of expensive perfume and cold rain. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, and her polished hair was disheveled.
“Arthur, please,” she begged, lunging forward to grab my forearm. Jared stepped in between us, shoving her back.
“Don't touch him!” Jared yelled.
“Jared, stop! You have to listen to me!” Lauren gasped, pulling a certified bank check from her coat pocket. “Look at this! It’s four hundred thousand dollars! I just transferred it from my corporate account! Take it! Arthur, it’s yours! Take the money, and we can settle this between us!”
“Four hundred thousand?” I asked, looking at the check with cold detachment. “What about the house, Lauren? What about Diane’s home?”
Her eyes widened in terror. She looked at David sitting with the legal filings, then back at Jared. “You... you looked at Horizon Vista?”
“We know about Bradley,” Jared said, his voice deadly calm. “We know about the mezzanine loan. We know about the forged POA. David has an emergency motion before Judge Vance at eight o’clock tomorrow morning.”
“You can’t do that!” Lauren shrieked, her voice turning hysterical. “The SEC is already reviewing Bradley’s portfolio! If your lawyer files that motion, Bradley gets arrested, and my company’s license gets revoked! We will lose everything!”
“You already lost everything, Lauren,” Jared said coldly. “The minute you decided my father was worth starving.”
“I gave you a life, Jared!” she screamed, dropping all pretenses of remorse. “You were a mid-level analyst when I met you! I made you! I introduced you to every high-net-worth client on your roster! Without me, you’re nothing!”
“And with you,” Jared said, taking off his platinum wedding band and letting it drop to the floor with a hollow metallic click, “I’m a man who let his father freeze for three years. Get out of this apartment before I have the police remove you for trespassing.”
Lauren glared at us, realizing her leverage was gone. “You’ll regret this, Arthur,” she spat at me. “You think you won? You have no idea who else signed off on those accounts.”

Before we could ask what she meant, she turned and sprinted down the hallway into the night.
