Chapter 9 - The Escort

The cool autumn air hit my face like cold water as we stepped onto the broad stone veranda of the Montgomery estate.
The long, winding gravel driveway—usually reserved for Mercedes Maybachs and vintage Bentleys—was blocked by four matte-black armored Suburbans, their red and blue strobe lights silently painting the manicured boxwood hedges in emergency hues.
At the center of the circular drive sat a massive, unmarked mobile tactical operations vehicle—an eight-wheeled communications fortress equipped with satellite dishes aligned toward the southern horizon. Two armed Navy master-at-arms in full tactical gear stood at the base of the vehicle's hydraulic stairs, rifles slung low.
"Look at that," Marcus muttered under his breath, nodding toward the wrought-iron perimeter gates.
Beyond the gates, four Metropolitan Police cruisers had parked with their lights spinning, completely sealing the Montgomery street from civilian traffic. The private neighborhood security guards who usually bullied delivery drivers were standing against their gatehouse wall, hands flat on their hips, under the watchful eyes of two armed federal marshals.
"The perimeter is clean, Ma'am," the Master Chief reported, trotting down the steps ahead of us. "Airspace over the estate has been declared a temporary restricted zone until your team completes uplink."
We climbed the heavy steel stairs into the mobile command vehicle.
The interior smelled of heated electronics, ozone, and filtered oxygen. Dual rows of high-resolution monitors lined the walls, glowing with encrypted telemetry, satellite feeds of the Mediterranean, and cascading walls of emerald-green command line code.
Six petty officers wearing tactical headsets snapped their heads toward the door the instant my boots hit the rubberized floor.
"Commander on deck!" the tactical watch officer shouted.
Six operators shot up from their ergonomic workstations, standing at rigid attention.
"As you were," I said, stripping off my cheap charcoal blazer and tossing it onto an empty bench. Beneath it, I wore a simple black tactical undershirt.
I stepped up to the primary command terminal.
Marcus took his place at my right shoulder, handing me a sleek, biometric authorization slate. "Satellite link to Strike Group Twelve is online, Commander. Admiral Gallagher has been holding the tactical conference bridge for five minutes."
I placed my thumb on the glass scanner.
The screen flashed blue. *BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED: COMMANDER E. MONTGOMERY. JSOC TACTICAL CLEARANCE GRANTED.*
I pulled the communications headset down over my ear, tapped the master transmit toggle, and spoke.

"Strike Group Twelve, this is Commander Montgomery. I have tactical command. Talk to me."
