Chapter 5 - Shattered Glass

Richard Montgomery stood rooted behind his high-backed chair, his aristocratic composure cracking down the middle. "There has been an absurd misunderstanding. This woman is Elena Montgomery. She has no military rank. She has never served a single day in uniform. She is an unemployed digital contractor whom we have just officially severed from this family!"

Commander Marcus Vance did not turn his head, but his jaw clenched with enough force to splinter bone.

"Sir," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a register that made the windowpanes vibrate. "If you address Commander Montgomery with that tone again in my presence, I will have you detained under Title 10 of the United States Code for interfering with active military command during a national defense emergency."

"Detained?" my father stammered, his legal pedigree suddenly useless. "In my own home?"

Grant scrambled to his feet, drying his drenched suit jacket with a linen napkin, his face flushed scarlet with humiliation. "Listen to me! I know the protocol here! I hold an active civilian secret clearance with the Department of Defense. I review logistics reports every single Tuesday! There is no 'Commander Elena Montgomery' in the defense registry! If she had rank, her name would be in the public directory! She's a nobody!"

Marcus Vance turned his head just enough to look Grant up and down with open, unadulterated disgust.

"You review logistics summaries, Mr. Sterling?" Marcus asked coldly. "You read the two-page civilian abstracts of operations that have already concluded. You see what we allow you to see."

"I am a Senior Director—"

"You are an administrative clerk with an inflated title and a clearance level so low you couldn't get through the third basement door of the Russell Building without a security escort," Marcus cut him down ruthlessly.

A gasp went around the table. Senator Hastings covered his mouth. Mrs. Albright leaned back, staring at Grant as if he had suddenly contracted the plague.

"Master Chief," Marcus said quietly.

"Sir."

"Verify Mr. Sterling’s credentials against the Special Access Program roster for Operation Black Horizon."

The Master Chief pulled a hardened tactical tablet from his belt, tapped the screen twice with a gloved thumb, and held it up. A bright red biometric denial box flashed on the screen with a low, sharp buzz.

"Negative, Commander," the Master Chief barked. "Sterling, Grant. Clearance ceiling: Secret-Collateral. Zero access to Tier-One operations. Status: Unqualified civilian observer."

Marcus looked back at Grant. The silence was merciless.

"Commander Elena Montgomery," Marcus said, speaking directly to the forty-two frozen guests, "is the Officer-in-Charge of the United States Navy’s Special Tactical Cyber Warfare Group. She is an active O-5 Commander. Her commission is personally assigned under Joint Special Operations Command. The reason her name isn't in your public directories, Mr. Sterling, is because if an adversary knew her name, they would dedicate the entire intelligence apparatus of a foreign state to finding her."

He looked back at me, extending a gloved hand.
