Chapter 8 - The Table Turns

I turned to Marcus. "Commander Vance. Escort me to the command vehicle."
"Right away, Commander," Marcus barked.
He snapped his fingers. The four tactical operators pivoted in unison, forming a diamond security formation around me with their carbines lowered in professional, impenetrable discipline.
As we moved down the central aisle toward the shattered oak doors, my father stepped into our path, his hands raised in a pathetic attempt to block the hallway.
"Elena! You cannot walk out of this family! If you leave this room with these men, you will never be welcomed back into this house! Do you hear me? You will be an exile forever!"
Marcus didn't even slow down. He took one step forward, placing his massive chest against my father's shoulder, and gently, relentlessly walked through him, forcing Richard Montgomery stumbling sideways into the sideboard. Silver dessert spoons cascaded across the Persian rug like hail.
"Out of the way, civilian," Marcus said without even looking back.
I paused at the threshold of the ruined doorway.
I looked back one last time at the forty-two guests.
Senator Hastings was already on the phone, his back turned to Grant, barking instructions to cancel civilian defense advisory retainers. Mrs. Albright was whispering furiously into the ear of a federal appellate judge, her eyes darting between my mother and the floor with open contempt.
Grant sat slumped in his soaked tuxedo chair, his head in his hands, realizing that his career, his security clearance, and his reputation in the capital had been incinerated in the span of six minutes.
Tessa stood alone by the banquet table, weeping silently into her napkin, looking at the empty seat where her sister had sat for seven years.
And my mother stood beneath the dazzling light of her six-figure chandelier, holding her ruined microphone, completely and totally isolated in the center of the room she had built to destroy me.
I met her eyes for one second.
May you like
Then I turned my back and walked out into the night.
