Chapter 8 - The Fall of Vanguard

The next seventy-two hours passed in a blur of federal agents, legal depositions, and media storms.

Dr. Reed’s evidence was foolproof. Armed with the original documents and biological research logs, my legal team—hired pro-bono by a renowned national child protection foundation—filed emergency racketeering and child trafficking charges against the Vanguard Trust.

Federal agents raided Vanguard’s Boston headquarters and the private medical facility in Switzerland. The story broke on every major national news network. Headlines blasted Caleb's face and Victoria Sterling’s mugshot across television screens from coast to coast:

"IVF HARVESTING SCANDAL: MOTHER SAVES NEWBORN FROM ELITE GENETIC CONSPIRACY."

Caleb and Margaret were arrested on the spot at the estate, charged with conspiracy to commit child trafficking, wire fraud, and falsification of legal documents. Because Caleb had signed parental release forms under fraudulent pretenses and received illegal offshore funds, his parental rights were permanently terminated by a federal judge within forty-eight hours.

Victoria Sterling’s high-priced lawyers tried to post her bail, but given the international scope of the illegal genetic trials and human rights violations, the judge deemed her a flight risk and remanded her to federal custody without bail.

Sitting in the courtroom on the final day of the preliminary hearings, I watched as Caleb was led away in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit. He turned back once, looking at me with eyes hollowed by regret, begging for a sign of forgiveness.

I didn't look back. I adjusted the pink blanket wrapped around Nora, placed my hand in my mother's, and walked out of the courthouse doors into the bright sunlight, surrounded by hundreds of supportive citizens and journalists cheering for our victory.
