Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Rearview

The house was silent, save for the soft ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway and Nora's rhythmic breathing. My father sat at the dining table, a heavy iron poker from the fireplace resting across his knees, while my mother paced the kitchen floor, wringing her hands until her skin turned red.
"We go to the police," my father declared, his jaw set like granite. "Attempted child trafficking. That's what this is."
"And say what?" I replied, holding Nora tight against my chest, her tiny warmth the only anchor keeping me from floating into madness. "That my husband signed a contract six years ago with a ghost corporation? Dad, look at that car outside. They’ve been parked there for three hours. If they have high-powered lawyers and medical foundations backing them, a small-town police department will just treat this as a domestic custody dispute."
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the counter. An unknown caller ID from an 857 area code—Boston.
My fingers trembled as I slid the button to answer. "Hello?"
"Mrs. Vance," a cool, refined female voice spoke softly into the receiver. "Or should I say, Ms. Miller, since your husband has so abruptly severed ties with you."
"Who is this?" I demanded, backing away from the window.
"My name is Victoria Sterling. I represent the Vanguard Genetic Preservation Trust. I believe your husband explained our arrangement."
"That contract is illegal!" I shouted, holding back a sob. "You can't buy a human being! You can't take my baby!"
"We didn't buy a human being, Ms. Miller. We funded an experimental genetic enhancement program that resulted in the birth of an heir to a five-billion-dollar estate. Nora carries the biological lineage of the late Arthur Sterling. Under the contract Caleb signed—and the pre-conception parental rights release executed in the state of Massachusetts—he legally assigned all custodial rights to the Trust upon the appearance of the physical marker."
"I never signed anything!" I screamed.
"You didn't have to," Victoria replied smoothly. "Caleb signed as the primary legal guardian and health proxy during your IVF treatments. But we are not monsters, Clara. We are offering you a settlement. Ten million dollars. You walk away, start a new life, and Nora is raised with unlimited wealth, top-tier security, and an elite education."
"Go to hell," I choked out.
"You have forty-eight hours until our legal team files an emergency ex-parte custody injunction in federal court," Victoria said, her tone devoid of emotion. "Enjoy your two days with her, Clara. Because after that, you will never see her again."

The line went dead. I dropped the phone onto the floor, staring at my father.
"Pack your bags," my dad said, standing up and grabbing his truck keys. "We’re leaving tonight."
