Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the Glass

Caleb’s knees pressed into the hard wood of my parents' front porch, his chest heaving as tears cut through the dust on his face. Margaret’s hand hovered over his collarbone, her knuckles white, her expression a mix of terrifying grief and sheer desperation.

"Say it, Caleb," I whispered, my voice trembling as my hands clutched the wooden frame of the door. "Say what you did."

"Nora isn't... she isn't just our baby," Caleb choked out, looking up at me through bloodshot eyes. "Six years ago, before we started IVF, my mother and I made a deal with a private fertility clinic in Boston. We were terrified we’d never conceive. I took a secret genetic trial program to boost sperm motility—an experimental protocol funded by an anonymous high-profile donor network."

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. "What are you talking about?"

"The protocol... it came with a clause," Margaret interrupted, her voice cracking. "If the child was born with certain recessive genetic markers—markers that match the elite donor's family bloodline—the contract dictates immediate surrender of full custody to the foundation in exchange for three million dollars. We were broke back then, Clara! We were losing the house! Caleb signed the contract thinking you'd never actually get pregnant, or that the traits would never show up!"

The air rushed out of my lungs. "You... you gambled our child before she was even conceived?"

"No!" Caleb sobbed, reaching for my shoes. "I thought it was a scam! But when Nora was born, I saw the birthmark behind her left ear—the identical spade-shaped mark the doctors warned me about. The moment I saw it, I knew the foundation's surveillance team would be notified by the hospital registry. I panicked, Clara! I pushed you away and threw your stuff out because the contract said if I showed emotional attachment or refused to comply upon birth, they would sue us into non-existence and take her by force anyway! I tried to act indifferent so they wouldn't target you!"

"You threw me out to protect yourself!" I screamed, the tears finally bursting free. My mother rushed from the kitchen, wrapping her arms around my waist as my legs buckled completely.

"They’re outside right now," Margaret whimpered, pointing toward a tinted black SUV parked down the quiet suburban street. "They followed us here. Clara, if we don't hand over Nora’s genetic records by midnight, they're going to execute the legal clause and take her under state emergency custody."

I looked back into the living room, where tiny Nora lay sleeping in her bassinet, completely unaware that her life had been bartered away six years ago by the man I loved.

"Get off my porch," I spat, my voice dropping to an icy, lethal whisper. "Both of you."

May you like

"Clara, please!" Caleb pleaded.

"If you step foot near my daughter again, Caleb, I won't just call the police—I will burn every single thing you own to the ground." I slammed the door in his face, the lock clicking like a gunshot in the quiet foyer.
