Chapter 7 - The Rats Scatter

By 2:00 p.m., the news had broken across the financial press.

*Crain's Chicago Business* ran a front-page headline online: **VALE HOLDINGS FACES SEC SCRUTINY; LENDERS FREEZE ASSETS AMID FRAUD ALLEGATIONS.**

Within an hour, *Bloomberg* picked it up. Daniel’s reputation in the Midwest commercial real estate sector was erased in an afternoon. Every broker, every institutional partner, and every high-net-worth investor who had clapped him on the back at the Union League Club was now deleting his number from their contacts to avoid being subpoenaed by federal investigators.

I sat in Sarah's office, monitoring the fallout on a tablet, when an unknown number flashed on the screen.

I answered. "Claire speaking."

"Claire? Please... don't hang up."

It was Vanessa.

Her voice was entirely different from the smug, purring tone she had used at my dining room table when she showed off my bracelet. She sounded breathless, terrified, and on the verge of total collapse.

"You have five seconds, Vanessa," I said evenly.

"Daniel lied to me!" she sobbed into the phone. "He told me you two were already legally separated! He told me the shell company was a legitimate tax-planning entity for real estate investments! I didn't know he was embezzling from Apex! Claire, the FBI just knocked on my mother’s door in Naperville!"

"You knew exactly what you were doing, Vanessa," I told her, my voice devoid of pity. "You sat at my holiday table, ate the food I cooked, drank the wine I bought, and smiled while my husband hit me for calling out your theft. Did you think that came without a bill?"

"He told me he was going to marry me!" she wailed. "Now he called me from his lawyer’s office and told me that if I don't take the blame for the Blue Horizon transfers, he’ll tell the feds I stole his digital signature! He’s trying to pin the entire embezzlement on me!"

"Of course he is," I said. "That’s what cowards do."

"Help me, Claire! Please! You have the original records! You know he authorized those wires!"

"I do have the records," I replied smoothly. "And I have already provided them to Special Agent Miller at the SEC. If you want to save yourself from five to ten years in federal prison, I suggest you take whatever files you have left on your laptop and walk directly into the federal building on Dearborn Street. Offer them full cooperation against Daniel. Because by tomorrow morning, he will have already offered them you."

She choked on a sob. "He... he really doesn't care about me at all, does he?"

"Daniel only cares about Daniel," I said. "And right now, he doesn't even have himself. Goodbye, Vanessa."

I disconnected the call and looked at Sarah.

"She’s going to turn state’s evidence," Sarah observed.

"Within an hour," I nodded. "Now, let’s go to the board meeting."
