Chapter 10 - The Rebirth

Two weeks later, the dust had begun to settle, though the legal machinery was still grinding relentlessly.
Vanessa Vance had accepted a plea bargain with the federal prosecutor, agreeing to testify against Daniel in exchange for a suspended sentence and full restitution of the diverted funds.
Daniel had been formally indicted on four counts of wire fraud, two counts of bank fraud, and one count of filing false financial statements with a federally insured institution. Unable to post his $2.5 million bail because all his accounts were frozen by court order, he was sitting in the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown, awaiting trial.
His mother had tried to visit me once at my new apartment in the Gold Coast.
She had stood in the lobby, weeping, begging me to withdraw the charges, claiming that Daniel would not survive prison. I didn't even go down to see her. I instructed the doorman to hand her a copy of the civil eviction notice for her suburban home, which had been seized by the bankruptcy trustee to satisfy Daniel’s unpaid corporate creditors.
Cruelty had been their currency for eleven years; they were simply receiving their change.
On a bright, crisp Tuesday morning, I sat in the newly renovated office of *Vanguard Asset Partners* on the twentieth floor of a boutique building on Michigan Avenue.
The name on the frosted glass was new. The leadership was mine.
With Mark Henderson’s backing and the support of seventy percent of Daniel’s former institutional clients, I had acquired the core, profitable real estate management contracts out of the Vale Holdings receivership for pennies on the dollar. Elena was now my director of operations, earning three times what Daniel had ever paid her.
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out at the city. The bruise on my cheek was completely gone, leaving no physical trace behind. I felt lighter, sharper, and more alive than I had in my entire adult life.
I had won.
The monster was locked in a cage, his accomplices were disgraced, and the empire he stole the credit for was now rightfully, legally mine.
I took a deep sip of my tea, feeling the warm, triumphant calm wash over my bones.
Then, my desk phone buzzed.
"Claire?" Elena’s voice came through the intercom, sounding hesitant and slightly unnerved. "There’s an older gentleman in the lobby. He says he needs to speak with you immediately."
"Who is it?" I asked.
May you like
"It’s Arthur Vale," Elena replied. "Daniel’s father."
