Chapter 7 - Day Four: The Trap Snaps Shut

By Friday morning, the facade of Vanguard Crest was crumbling in real time.

Local financial news outlets were running chyrons about "Sudden Regulatory Inquiries" into the Meridian development. Outside Julian’s corporate headquarters, two local news vans were already idling, their cameras trained on the glass double doors.

Inside the penthouse in River Oaks, the atmosphere was toxic.

Vanessa had spent the night packing three large designer suitcases, sobbing hysterically while Julian threw empty Scotch tumblers against the fireplace.

"You used me!" Vanessa screamed, dragging a suitcase across the foyer. "Elena told me everything! You put that offshore company in my name so I’d take the fall for your stolen money!"

"Shut your mouth!" Julian roared, his eyes bloodshot, his shirt unbuttoned halfway down his chest. "Elena is lying to you! She’s playing mind games because she knows she’s lost! If you walk out that door, you don't get a single dime of the Zurich account!"

"What Zurich account?" Vanessa shrieked back. "The card was declined! The accounts are frozen! The police are going to arrest me because of you!"

"Nobody is getting arrested!" Julian lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa’s arm with the same brutal grip he had used on me forty-eight hours earlier. "You stay right here until I meet Elena tonight. She wants me to beg. Fine. I’ll beg. I’ll give her whatever percentage she wants to lift the freeze, and then we’re on the charter flight out of Houston tomorrow morning."

Vanessa looked at the wild, frantic gleam in Julian’s eyes—the unhinged desperation of a man who realized his empire was built on quicksand. For the first time, she saw him clearly.

"Let go of me," she whispered.

"I said sit down!"

Vanessa pulled her hand back and slapped him across the face with all the strength in her body.

Julian stumbled backward, stunned.

"You're a monster," Vanessa cried, tears streaking her mascara. "And Elena was right. You're completely pathetic."

She grabbed her luggage, bolted out the front door, and slammed it behind her, leaving Julian standing alone in the cavernous, echoing silence of the home he had stolen from me.

He wiped a bead of blood from his lip, breathing heavily. He looked at the antique grandfather clock in the corner.

It was 4:30 PM.

Two and a half hours until dinner at *L’Abeille*.

He walked to the safe in his study, unlocked it, and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box containing a three-carat sapphire necklace—the exact duplicate of the heirloom I had removed from the safe two days earlier. He had bought it months ago as an apology gift for an affair he had nearly gotten caught having in Dallas.

"One dinner," Julian muttered to himself, his fingers trembling as he smoothed his hair in the mirror. "Just get her to sign the release. Just twenty-four hours."

He had no idea that while he was rehearsing his apologies, two federal marshals were sitting in an unmarked sedan two hundred yards down his driveway, logging every movement he made.
