Chapter 10 - The Public Unraveling

The chaos inside the ballroom was instantaneous and absolute.

Investors stood up, shouting into their phones. Society wives clutched their pearls, backing away from Julian as if he were carrying the plague.

Julian scrambled onto the edge of the stage, his face twisted in a mask of homicidal rage. "Turn it off! Turn the damn screens off!"

He lunged toward me, his hands reaching for my neck.

Before he could bridge the gap, two plainclothes federal agents intercepted him, driving him face-first onto the polished oak floorboards of the stage. The heavy crunch of his nose hitting the wood resounded through the open microphone.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, and witness tampering," an agent barked, twisting Julian’s arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists.

Julian thrashed against the floor, spitting blood, his eyes locking onto mine as I stood above him.

"You planned this!" he screamed, his voice breaking into a ragged shriek. "You knew about the accounts before Tuesday! You let me cut your hair! You let me do it!"

I knelt down beside him, smoothing the hem of my midnight-blue velvet gown so it didn't touch the pool of wine spilling from an overturned glass.

"I didn't let you do anything, Julian," I whispered into his ear, low enough that only he could hear. "You did it because you're small. You're cruel. And you truly believed that hurting a woman made you powerful."

I stood back up, stepping over his outstretched legs as the agents hauled him to his feet.

As they dragged him down the center aisle of the ballroom, the room erupted into a deafening roar of flashing cameras and shouting journalists who had broken through the security barricades outside.

In the back of the room, trying to slip out through the kitchen exit, was Vanessa Stone.

Two Austin police detectives stepped directly into her path.

"Vanessa Stone?" the lead detective asked, holding up a badge. "You’re under arrest as an accessory to grand larceny and corporate embezzlement. Hands behind your back."

Vanessa burst into tears, her designer bag tumbling to the floor, spilling credit cards, lipsticks, and her boarding pass for a flight to Miami that she would never board.

I stood on the center of that stage, surrounded by applause, stunned silence, and the flashing strobe lights of justice.

For the first time in fourteen years, I breathed air that was entirely my own.
