Chapter 5 - Day Three: The Cracks in Vanessa's Armor

Vanessa Stone believed she had won the jackpot.
By Thursday afternoon, she was strutting down South Congress Avenue, ducking in and out of designer boutiques with Julian’s titanium American Express card tucked into her newly purchased Saint Laurent handbag.
Julian had spent the last twenty-four hours screaming into his phone at lawyers, bankers, and city council aides, completely distracted by the Meridian disaster. To shut her up when she complained about him neglecting her, he had tossed his card onto the kitchen island and told her to "go buy something pretty for the weekend gala."
She ended her shopping spree at *Kallista Fine Jewelry*, Austin’s most exclusive private jeweler.
"I'd like to see the diamond eternity bands," Vanessa announced loudly as she entered the hushed, velvet-lined showroom. "Four carats and above. Don't waste my time with commercial-grade stones."
The store manager, a distinguished silver-haired woman named Beatrice, offered a courteous smile. "Of course, madam. Right this way."
Vanessa spent forty-five minutes trying on rings, taking selfies for her private Instagram account with captions like *Upgrading my life* and *Mrs. V loading...*
She finally pointed to a stunning five-carat oval diamond set in platinum. "This one. Ring it up."
"Certainly," Beatrice said. "That piece is one hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars, plus tax."
Vanessa tossed the titanium card onto the glass counter like a seasoned socialite. "Put it on Julian Vance’s corporate account. He's Vanguard Crest."
Beatrice took the card, ran it through the terminal, and waited.
A sharp, abrasive beep echoed through the quiet boutique.
Beatrice frowned slightly, swiped it again, and typed a merchant override code.
Another beep.
"I apologize, Ms. Stone," Beatrice said smoothly. "The transaction was declined by the issuing bank."
Vanessa’s voice rose an octave. "That's impossible! That card has a five-hundred-thousand-dollar limit! Run it again!"
"I have run it twice. The system indicates: *Account Frozen by Court Order.*"
"Do you know who I am?" Vanessa shrieked, slamming her palms on the glass. "I am Julian Vance’s partner! Call the bank directly!"
"She won't need to call the bank, Beatrice," a voice called out from the private viewing salon at the back of the store.
Vanessa spun around.
I walked out of the archway, holding a delicate porcelain cup of Earl Grey tea. I was wearing an ivory tailored pantsuit, my new haircut sharp and gleaming under the halogen spots, looking every inch the woman whose family name had funded half this city's cultural centers.
"Elena?" Vanessa gasped, backing into the display case. "You... you did this?"
"I didn't do anything, Vanessa," I said, taking a slow sip of tea. "The Travis County District Court did. At ten o'clock this morning, Judge Alvarez signed an emergency freeze on all accounts associated with Vanguard Crest. Which means that little piece of metal in your hand is currently worthless."
"You're crazy!" Vanessa spat, her face twisting with venom. "Julian is going to crush you! He’s transferring millions to Europe! We’re moving to Monaco next month! You’re just a pathetic, aging ex-wife whose husband couldn't stand touching her anymore!"
I didn't flinch. I set my teacup down on the counter and stepped closer to her, lowering my voice so only she and Beatrice could hear.
"Did Julian tell you that V-Star Enterprises was registered under your Social Security number?" I asked gently.
Vanessa blinked, her bravado faltering. "What?"
"When Julian set up the Cayman shell to divert my father’s trust funds," I continued, watching the blood drain from her cheeks, "he needed a clean name as the primary corporate officer to avoid triggering an automatic SEC flag under his own disclosures. So he used yours, Vanessa. He had you sign those 'standard employment onboarding forms' last November, didn't he?"
Her lips parted. "He... he said it was for executive profit-sharing."
"He made you the sole managing director of a corporation that received nineteen million dollars in illegally embezzled funds," I whispered. "Which means when the FBI’s financial crimes unit raids his office tomorrow morning... Julian will claim you were the rogue employee who orchestrated the theft. He’s already prepared the memo. Marcus found the draft in his cloud backup last night."
Vanessa’s knees visibly wobbled. She grabbed the edge of the velvet counter to keep from collapsing. "No. No, he loves me. He left you for me!"
May you like
"Julian loves Julian," I said, reaching out to gently touch the sleeve of the jacket she had bought with a card that was now dead. "You were just an alibi with pretty lips. If I were you, Vanessa, I’d take an Uber to the nearest criminal defense attorney before Julian realizes his escape hatch just snapped shut."
