Chapter 4 - The Inheritance of Fire

Ten minutes after Caleb and a screaming Vanessa were dragged down the stone steps by security under the flashing cameras of the paparazzi, the funeral service concluded in somber dignity. I knelt before my father's casket, kissing the polished mahogany wood.
"Rest now, Dad," I whispered through hot tears. "I’ll handle the monsters."
Arthur Harlan waited for me by the black Maybach at the curb. Rain had begun to fall over Manhattan, slicking the asphalt like black glass. When I slid into the leather interior, Harlan closed the privacy glass and placed the matte-black envelope into my lap.
"There is more, Eleanor," Harlan said quietly, his voice softening from the harsh courtroom tone he had used inside. "Your father knew Caleb was reckless, but he didn't realize how deep the rot went until three weeks ago."
I ran my fingers over the heavy paper. "What did he find, Arthur?"
"Richard hired a private forensic firm to audit the European shell corporations Caleb set up under your name," Harlan explained, opening a leather briefcase and pulling out a thick manila folder. "Caleb wasn't just stealing to fund his mistress’s lavish lifestyle or buy properties. He was leveraged up to his neck with offshore predatory lenders in Macau and Zurich. He lost nearly eighty million dollars on unauthorized crypto derivatives."
My breath caught in my throat. "Eighty million?"
"He used your forged signatures to pledge your future inheritance as collateral," Harlan said gravely. "If Richard had died without this codicil, those creditors would have foreclosed on Vance Global's proprietary patents within thirty days. Caleb was planning to let the company collapse, cash out a golden parachute, and flee to a non-extradition country with Vanessa."
The sheer depravity of it made my stomach churn. For four years, I had made this man dinner, rubbed his back when he complained of stress, supported his career, and believed him when he said he loved me. All the while, he was digging a grave for everything my family possessed.
"And my child?" I asked, placing a trembling hand on my belly. "Did he know about the pregnancy when he took those loans?"
Harlan looked out the window, his expression grim. "He knew. In fact, he took out an offshore life insurance policy on you two months ago, Eleanor. A policy that would pay out thirty million dollars in the event of your death due to 'maternal complications' during childbirth."
The world seemed to spin on its axis. A cold, suffocating terror gripped my chest, quickly replaced by a white-hot fury that burned away every remaining tear.

"He wanted me dead," I whispered, the words tasting like ash.
"Richard made sure you would survive," Harlan said, turning back to me with iron in his gaze. "In this envelope are the access keys to your father’s private server in Geneva. It contains unedited recordings of Caleb discussing the insurance policy with his offshore broker. You don't just hold his financial ruin in your hands, Eleanor. You hold the key to his prison cell."
