Chapter 11 - Whispers in the Dark

Two hundred miles away, inside the maximum-security holding wing of the federal detention facility, Caleb Sterling sat on a steel bunk in an orange jumpsuit. His cheekbones were hollow, his hands calloused and rough, stripped of the manicures and bespoke watches he once flaunted.
A heavy steel door buzzed open. A guard stepped into the hallway, followed by a man in an impeccably tailored navy suit.
It was not Jonathan Croft.
The guard unlocked the cell door and stepped back, keeping his hand on his baton. "Five minutes, counselor."
The man in the suit sat down on the narrow metal bench opposite Caleb. He pulled out a sleek silver cigarette case, took one out, and tapped it against the lid without lighting it.
"You made a spectacular mess of things, Caleb," the man said, his voice cultured, smooth, and chillingly familiar.
Caleb looked up, a manic, spiteful grin slowly curling his cracked lips. "You took your sweet time getting here, Uncle Julian."
Julian Vance—my father’s estranged younger brother, who had vanished from the public eye a decade ago after a bitter dispute over international holding trusts—smiled faintly.
"Richard thought he was so clever with his little black envelope," Julian murmured, leaning in close so the guard outside couldn't hear. "He thought by cutting you off and leaving everything to Eleanor, the Vance fortune would remain untouchable."
"She ruined me, Julian!" Caleb snarled, leaning forward until the chains around his waist clinked sharply. "She put me in this cage! You promised me if I drained the European reserves, your private syndicate would step in and buy the debt!"
"And we still will," Julian replied calmly. "You were simply too greedy, too clumsy with that ridiculous mistress. But your failure created the exact volatility we needed. Eleanor is brilliant in a courtroom, but she has no idea how deep the offshore syndicate runs."
Julian stood up, straightening his cuffs. From his inner pocket, he produced a small, encrypted burner device and slid it beneath Caleb's thin mattress.
"What is this?" Caleb whispered.
"A secure link to the Zurich accounts Richard never discovered," Julian whispered back, his dark eyes glittering with cold malice. "Eleanor thinks the war ended at Richard’s grave. She thinks her child will inherit the empire."

Julian turned toward the cell door, knocking once for the guard. He looked back over his shoulder, his smile razor-sharp.
"Let her enjoy her peace for a few more weeks. Because when the child is born, the true codicil comes into play—and Eleanor Vance will find out that the black envelope was only the first chapter of her family’s ruin."
