Chapter 2 - The Seal of Retribution

Arthur Harlan pulled a pair of gold-plated shears from his breast pocket and sliced through the crimson wax seal without a tremor in his hands. The sharp crack of the wax echoed in the vaulted silence of the cathedral like a gunshot.

Caleb stepped forward, his polished Italian leather shoes squeaking insolently against the marble floor. "Arthur, stop this stunt right now. You are Richard’s employee, and Richard is dead. As Eleanor’s legal husband and her appointed power of attorney, I demand you hand over all personal documents immediately."

Harlan didn't even look up as he slipped a single sheet of heavy cream parchment from the black envelope. "Mr. Sterling, your power of attorney was revoked eighty-two hours ago. At precisely nine-fifteen on Tuesday morning, forty-eight hours before Richard Vance’s passing, he signed this emergency codicil in the presence of two superior court judges and the head of the New York Bar Association."

A ripple of hushed whispers rolled across the pews. Dignitaries, Wall Street executives, and media barons leaned forward, their eyes darting between Caleb’s darkening face and Harlan’s cold expression.

Vanessa took half a step backward, her perfectly glossed lips parting in sudden unease. "Caleb... what does he mean?"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Caleb hissed under his breath. He glared at the lawyer. "My wife’s signature is required to modify any marital power of attorney. You know the bylaws. You're bluffing to protect her petty pride."

"Allow me to read from the document itself," Harlan said, raising his voice so it resonated off the stained glass windows. "'I, Richard Vance, being of sound mind and acutely aware of the predatory, treasonous conduct of my son-in-law, Caleb Sterling, hereby enact the Vance Bloodline Clause.'"

Harlan paused, his steely eyes fixing directly on Caleb.

"'In light of clear, verified evidence of embezzlement exceeding sixty million dollars from Vance Global, and ongoing domestic betrayal with one Vanessa Cross, all marital assets, joint bank authorizations, and executive corporate privileges granted to Caleb Sterling are null and void effective upon my death.'"

The church exploded into audible gasps. Caleb’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. His pale blue eyes burned with fury as he stared at me. "Eleanor, you orchestrated this. You used that old bastard on his deathbed to forge an illegal addendum!"

"My father saw through you long before you ever dared bring your whore to his funeral, Caleb," I said, stepping forward. I was trembling on the inside, but my posture was rigid, my chin held high. "He knew what you were doing. And he made sure you wouldn't take a single dime of what he built."

Harlan turned the page over, holding up a sleek black USB drive tucked into the envelope's inner pocket. "Furthermore, the codicil stipulates that private security has already seized all corporate laptops, mobile devices, and access badges belonging to Mr. Sterling. The server logs, wire transfers, and surveillance footage will be delivered to the Southern District of New York by noon tomorrow."

Caleb lunged forward, reaching for the paper, but two massive men in dark suits stepped out from behind the altar. Marcus and Lev, my father’s personal bodyguards for two decades, blocked Caleb’s path like twin brick walls.

"You have no authority here, Mr. Sterling," Marcus rumbled, his hand resting conspicuously on his tailored jacket. "Step away from Mrs. Vance-Sterling."
