Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The silence in the grand hall of Blackwood Manor was suffocating. The crystal chandelier overhead cast sharp, cold light across the polished marble, illuminating Vanessa’s drained complexion. She took another trembling step backward, her burgundy satin gown rustling violently against the silence.
"Adrian... you're standing," she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of sheer panic. "You... you were paralyzed. The doctors said the nerve damage was irreversible."
"Doctors can be bribed, Vanessa. Or misled," Adrian said coldly. His voice possessed none of the frail, beaten timbre he had adopted over the last seven months. It was deep, commanding, and resonated through the corridor like thunder. He stood tall, broad-shouldered in his tailored suit, showing no sign of weakness or tremor.
Beside him, Emma remained on the floor, her hands still clutching the cold metal frame of the wheelchair. Her stockings were torn at the knee where she had slammed into the stone, a dark crimson stain blooming through the fabric. Her wide, hazel eyes flickered between the man she had bathed, fed, and wheeled around for over half a year and the terrifying realization of his secret.
"Emma," Adrian said softly, his harsh gaze softening for a fraction of a second as he looked down at her. He offered a broad, calloused hand. "Let me help you up."
Emma pulled her hand back slightly. The sting of betrayal was unmistakable on her face. "You walked for three months... while I lifted you into your bed every night? While I strained my back carrying you into the garden?"
"I had to be certain," Adrian murmured, regret lacing his words. But before he could elaborate, his eyes snapped back toward Vanessa, whose fingers were desperately clutching her diamond clutch. She was inching toward the hallway leading to the west wing.
"Where are you going, Vanessa?" Adrian asked, taking a deliberate, heavy step forward. Each footfall echoed like a gavel striking wood. "You were so eager to take me to the terrace just moments ago. You insisted the fresh air would do me good. Was the air supposed to greet me at the bottom of thirty marble steps?"
"It was an accident!" she shrieked, her composed facade completely shattering. Sweat beaded along her hairline, ruining her immaculate makeup. "The carpet slipped under my heels! The brakes failed! Why are you looking at me like I’m a monster?"
May you like
"Because the brakes on this chair are mechanical and require manual engagement, which Emma locked in a split second," Adrian said, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "And because my security team finished auditing your offshore accounts this afternoon. Seven million dollars transferred from Blackwood Holdings into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. A fund accessible only upon my verified demise."
Vanessa froze, her eyes darting toward the grand staircase behind him, realizing the trap had not closed around Adrian, but around herself.
