Chapter 11 - The Shadow Behind the Curtain

Two days later, the morning sun finally broke through the clouds, casting brilliant golden beams across Blackwood Manor. The grand marble staircase, once a site of attempted murder, was now lined with fresh white lilies.

Adrian stood in the grand entrance hall, fully dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit. Emma descended the stairs slowly, her knee wrapped in a supportive brace, but walking with confidence. She wore a tailored emerald dress, her hair pinned up, radiating a quiet elegance that outshone anyone who had ever walked through those doors.

"The board meeting is in an hour," Emma said with a small smile. "Are you ready to show them that Blackwood Holdings is entirely back under your control?"

"With you as my Chief of Operations? They won't stand a chance," Adrian replied, offering his arm.

Emma took it, leaning against him, the lingering pain in her knee swallowed by the warmth of his presence.

Just as they reached the grand double doors leading to his waiting limousine, the heavy brass telephone on the entryway console began to ring. It wasn't the standard house line; it was the direct, encrypted landline wired only to the high-security Blackwood family vault downtown.

Adrian paused, his brow furrowing. "Wait here."

He walked over to the console and lifted the heavy receiver. "Speak."

A distorted, electronically altered voice filtered through the speaker, chillingly calm.

"Congratulations on surviving the fall, Adrian. And congratulations on cleaning up the trash. Julian was always too arrogant, Vanessa was far too vain, and Robert... well, Robert was getting greedy."

Adrian’s grip on the receiver tightened until his knuckles turned white. "Who is this?"

"Did you really believe three pathetic fools could plan a multi-billion-dollar corporate assassination on their own?" the voice laughed softly, a metallic, mocking sound. "They were just the vanguard, Adrian. The pawns meant to test your defenses. And now that you've publicly reclaimed your empire, all your assets are consolidated under one single, vulnerable roof."

Adrian's heart slammed against his ribs. He turned sharply to look at Emma, who was watching him from the doorway, her smile fading into concern as she noticed his expression.

"What did you do?" Adrian demanded, his voice dropping to a ferocious, deadly rasp.

"Look beneath the limousine, Adrian," the voice whispered. "Thirty seconds. Tick... tock."
