Chapter 10 - Breaking Point

An hour later, the master suite was filled with the flashing red and blue lights of half a dozen police cruisers. Paramedics wheeled Dr. Robert Vance out on a gurney, strapped securely under the watchful eyes of armed officers.

Detective Miller stood in the study, reviewing the files recovered from Robert’s encrypted phone.

"It's an airtight case, Mr. Blackwood," Miller said, closing the tablet. "We have the wire transfers from Julian, the medical records altered by Vance, and Vanessa’s confession. She cracked forty minutes into the interrogation. She admitted to pushing the wheelchair."

Adrian nodded slowly, a white sterile bandage taped across his cheek where the cut had been stitched. "Make sure none of them receive bail."

"With attempted capital murder charges? They won't see daylight for thirty years," Miller promised. He tipped his cap toward Emma, who was sitting wrapped in a warm wool blanket, and exited the study.

The silence that settled over the manor this time was different. The ghosts of conspiracy and deceit had been dragged into the light and purged. Yet, an unresolved tension hung heavily between the two people remaining in the room.

Adrian walked over to Emma and knelt before her once again.

"I know I broke your trust," he said softly, looking into her tired eyes. "When I realized what Robert was doing... when I realized he was using you... I wanted to kill him. But I had to protect you from being implicated as his accomplice. If the police thought you knew, you would have been arrested alongside them."

Emma looked down at her hands. "All those months... when I took care of you... did you ever see me as one of them? A suspect?"

"Never," Adrian said fiercely, reaching out to cup her face in his warm, steady hands. "Not for a single second. You were the only reason I kept fighting to stand. When my legs felt like lead, when the physical therapy felt like fire... I did it because I wanted to stand beside you as an equal, not as a burden."

Emma’s breath hitched. A solitary tear spilled over her lashes, landing on his thumb. "You're an idiot, Adrian Blackwood."

"I am," he whispered, a rare, genuine smile curving his lips. "Your idiot."

He leaned in slowly, giving her every chance to pull away. She didn't. When his lips met hers, it was soft, desperate, and filled with seven months of unsaid words. Emma gripped the lapels of his sweater, leaning into the warmth and strength she had protected with her life.
