Chapter 8 - The Shadow Prince

As the dinner ended in stifling, awkward silence, I stepped out onto the vast stone terrace of the Vance manor to wait for my driver. The night air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and oncoming rain.

"That was quite a performance inside."

A deep, baritone voice cut through the dark.

I turned toward the shadow of the stone pavilion. A tall silhouette stepped into the moonlight. Broad-shouldered, sharp-featured, with eyes like polished obsidian, Julian Vance looked like a darker, far more dangerous version of his younger half-brother.

Julian was the illegitimate eldest son of the late patriarch Vance—the exile who had clawed his way through the cutthroat world of private equity, building an empire completely separate from the family trust. Lucas feared him; Eleanor loathed him.

Instantly, the comments exploded into a flurry of scarlet and gold warnings:

*WARNING: Boss character appearing!*

*Julian Vance: The Shadow Sovereign of Wall Street.*

*In the original storyline, Julian single-handedly buys out Vance Capital after Lucas ruins the company with Emma!*

*He doesn't care about family. He only cares about absolute leverage.*

"Julian," I said smoothly, inclining my head. "I didn't realize you attended family dinners."

"I don't," Julian said, leaning against a marble pillar, a lit cigarette glowing between his scarred fingers. "I came to collect the deed to the vintage automobile collection. Lucas used my custom Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita as collateral for a private loan from my firm six months ago. He defaulted on the interest payment yesterday."

My breath hitched slightly. The $50M car.

Lucas hadn't even owned the car he was offering to his friends. He had wagered Julian’s vehicle.

"He promised that car to his friends," I said, unable to hide the faint smirk playing on my lips. "To destroy me."

"I know," Julian replied calmly, exhaling a thin plume of smoke into the midnight air. "I've had eyes on Lucas's circle for three years. Derek’s hospital stay, Ryan’s sudden panic at Whitaker Tower... you've been busy, Sophia."

I didn't back down. I took a step toward him, meeting his piercing gaze dead on. "Are you here to protect your little brother, Julian?"

Julian let out a low, dark chuckle that vibrated through the quiet garden. "Protect him? I've been waiting five years for someone to strip the arrogance off that pathetic boy's face. But I didn't expect the executioner to be his delicate fiancé."

*Julian respect meter: +50!*

*He hates Lucas more than anyone! He wants Vance Capital broken!*

"Then consider me your partner," I said quietly. "Lucas wants to humiliate me at the Foundation Gala on Saturday. He has a trap waiting for me. I intend to turn that stage into his scaffold."

Julian looked down at me, his eyes gleaming with genuine curiosity and something far more dangerous—admiration.

"A scaffold requires a noose, Sophia," Julian murmured, stepping closer until I could smell the leather and dark cedar clinging to his coat. "What do you need?"

"Access to the main projector controls at the Grand Hyatt Ballroom," I whispered. "And the title to that Koenigsegg."

Julian’s lips curved into a wicked, devastating smile. "Consider it done. Let's burn them down together."
