Chapter 5 - Checkmate in High Rises

The silence in the office was deafening.

Ryan stared at me, his fingers freezing where they rested on the desk. "I don't know what fairy tales you've been listening to, Sophia, but making baseless accusations against Whitaker Capital is a very fast way to end up in federal prison for slander."

"Baseless?" I laughed softly.

*Tell him about the secondary IP address on his home router,* a comment flashed in electric cyan. *He logged into the Caymans portal using his personal laptop at 2:14 AM because he was too lazy to use the encrypted terminal.*

"You logged into the Blue Crest portal from your private penthouse on 5th Avenue at 2:14 AM yesterday," I stated with absolute precision. "Using your personal network without a proxy. You authorized the wire transfer to Harbor Inspector Miller, attached the falsified chemical manifest, and then forwarded a copy to Lucas Vance with the caption: *‘The trap is set. Tell the dealer to prep the Trevita for delivery.’*"

Ryan bolted to his feet, knocking his heavy leather chair backward into the glass wall. "Who gave you that?! Did Derek talk to you?!"

"Derek is currently in a hospital bed with severe tachycardia and an impending police inquiry," I said, leaning back comfortably in my chair. "And you, Ryan, are twenty minutes away from having your private financial records delivered to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Department of Justice."

"You wouldn't dare," Ryan hissed, his suave demeanor shattering completely, revealing the feral, cornered beast beneath. "The Vance family owns the district attorney! Lucas will bury you before you even walk out the front lobby!"

"Lucas doesn't care about you, Ryan," I said calmly. "To Lucas, you and Derek are just loyal attack dogs he throws scraps to. Do you honestly think he would risk his family's multi-billion-dollar merger with Emma's conglomerate to protect you from an offshore bribery indictment?"

*Oof, hit him right in the pride,* a comment noted gleefully. *Ryan always hated playing second fiddle to Lucas. He secretly despises him!*

Ryan’s jaw clenched so hard I heard the enamel grind. His chest rose and fell in ragged breaths as his analytical mind rapidly calculated his odds. He was arrogant, but he wasn't stupid. He knew the paper trail existed because he had created it himself.

"What do you want?" Ryan rasped, his voice dropping an octave.

"Three things," I said, holding up three fingers. "First, you call Inspector Miller right now, cancel the flags, and issue a public clearance apology for my father's fleet within the hour."

Ryan swallowed hard, nodding once. "Done. And the second?"

"The predatory loan contract on this desk," I said, pointing to the paper. "You will redraft it. Whitaker Capital will provide an unconditional fifty-million-dollar line of credit to my father's logistics company at zero percent interest, guaranteed by your personal equity."

"That's extortion!" Ryan snarled.

"That's business," I countered coolly. "And third... when Lucas calls you to ask if you've succeeded in seducing me, you will tell him everything is going perfectly according to his plan. You will tell him I am falling apart, leaning on you for emotional support, and that the trap will snap shut at the Charity Gala on Saturday."

Ryan stared at me as if he were seeing a ghost. "You're insane. You're planning to take down Lucas in front of everyone."

"No," I replied, standing up and picking up my purse. "I'm planning to erase him."
