Chapter 8 - The Poisoned Alliance

Back in the Crystal Ballroom of the Union League Club, the silence was suffocating.

Logan stood frozen before the crowd, his eyes darting frantically across the faces of fifty elite business partners, board members, and social peers. His mother was trembling with confusion and indignation.

"Logan?" Eleanor Vance demanded, clutching his sleeve. "What is she talking about? What recording?"

"She's lying!" Logan shouted, his voice cracking with hysteria. He pointed an accusing finger at Arianna. "She’s unstable! She’s having a hysterical reaction to the pregnancy hormones! She’s trying to derail my career because she knows the board wants me in the Director's chair!"

"Is that so, Logan?" a new voice chimed in from the back of the ballroom.

The crowd parted.

Julian Hayes walked forward. He was Logan’s closest fraternity brother, the very man who had cheered and toasted to Arianna's entrapment in Room 608 of the Drake Hotel.

Julian’s face was pale, his eyes downcast, holding a folder of printed text logs.

Logan stared at his friend in disbelief. "Julian? What the hell are you doing?"

"I’m saving myself, Logan," Julian said quietly, not meeting his eyes. He turned to Arthur Harrison and Evelyn Davenport, who were watching from the front row. "Mr. Vance approached me three weeks ago. He asked me to help him route proprietary Davenport logistics pricing structures to Apex Capital through an off-grid terminal."

Gasps exploded across the ballroom.

"You bastard!" Logan lunged forward, but Carter Cole stepped smoothly into his path, his sheer physical bulk blocking Logan effortlessly.

"Don't touch him, Mr. Vance," Carter warned in a low, resonant tone. "You are currently on camera, and two uniformed officers from the Financial Crimes Division are waiting outside in the foyer."

Julian didn't look at Logan. "He bragged about poking holes in the condoms with a tie pin from his dresser. He told us he was going to knock Arianna up, force her into an early maternity leave, take the director seat, and then cash out an eight-million-dollar finder's fee from Apex once the merger collapsed."

Julian looked directly at Arianna, his voice trembling with shame. "I'm sorry, Arianna. I took the immunity deal Evelyn offered me this morning. I turned over the group chat logs and the voicemails."

Eleanor Vance gasped and collapsed backward onto a velvet settee, dropping her champagne flute. The crystal shattered across the marble, dark golden liquid pooling like venom around her satin shoes.

Logan looked around the room. Arthur Harrison was glaring at him with utter disgust. Evelyn Davenport looked as if she were inspecting a cockroach beneath her heel. The society reporters were furiously typing on their phones.

"Arianna..." Logan choked out, his arrogance crumbling into pathetic desperation. He fell to his knees on the parquet floor, reaching out toward the hem of her red velvet gown. "Arianna, please! I did it for us! I wanted us to have an empire together! Think about our baby! You can't do this to the father of your child!"

Arianna looked down at him. Her face was as cold and beautiful as carved marble.

May you like

"You are not a father, Logan," she said, each word landing like a hammer blow on an anvil. "You are a saboteur who mistook my patience for weakness. And tomorrow morning, the board will officially make you nothing."
