Chapter 7 - The Medical Verdict

Twelve hours before the dinner at the Union League Club, Arianna had sat in a sunlit private examination room at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Sarah Lin, Arianna’s personal physician for six years, turned the ultrasound monitor so Arianna could see.

On the screen was a tiny, pulsing speck of light within a dark crescent.

*Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.*

The sound of the heartbeat filled the quiet room—rapid, delicate, and miraculously fierce.

Tears sprang unbidden into Arianna’s eyes, hot and silent, tracking down her cheeks. She pressed her hand over her mouth. She had spent the last thirty-six hours treating the pregnancy as a corporate battlefield, a tactical variable in Logan’s sick power play. But hearing that rhythmic, stubborn little drum inside her broke the dam.

"Six weeks and two days," Dr. Lin said softly, handing her a tissue. "Everything looks completely healthy, Arianna. Uterine lining is strong. Heart rate is one hundred and twenty beats per minute."

"Is it... is it really okay?" Arianna whispered.

"It's thriving," Dr. Lin replied gently, wiping away the ultrasound gel. "Now, tell me what’s really going on. You requested an expedited toxicology screen and a chain-of-custody documentation on your physical exam."

Arianna sat up, pulling her blouse back into place. "I was the victim of reproductive coercion, Sarah. My birth control was intentionally sabotaged by my partner to impede my career and force a marriage."

Dr. Lin’s professional calm shattered into immediate outrage. "My God. Arianna, that’s a felony under state statutes for non-consensual reproductive interference."

"I know," Arianna said, wiping her face clear of tears. When she looked up, the vulnerability was gone. Only steel remained. "I need every test, every date, and your signed affidavit on the medical timeline sealed and handed directly to Carter Cole."

Two hours later, Arianna was sitting in Carter Cole’s wood-paneled office on LaSalle Street.

Carter, a silver-haired shark with three decades of dismantling corrupt men under his belt, laid out five separate documents on his desk.

"Under Illinois law," Carter explained, sliding a fountain pen toward her, "you have grounds for an immediate emergency order of protection based on coercive control and fraud. Furthermore, this document here is an irrevocable parental rights severance petition."

"Will it hold?" Arianna asked.

"With the audio recording of him admitting he punctured the prophylactics to sabotage your corporate status?" Carter gave a cold, razor-edged laugh. "A judge won't just deny him custody, Arianna. They’ll grant a permanent restraining order. He won't be allowed within five hundred feet of you or the child. He won't have visitation. He won't even have the right to know what hospital you deliver in."

"And his claim to my assets through common-law or engagement status?"

"Completely obliterated," Carter said. "In fact, we are filing a civil tort for intentional infliction of emotional distress and battery. By the time I’m done with Logan Vance, he won't be able to afford a bus ticket out of Cook County, let alone my client’s director chair."

Arianna picked up the pen and signed her name with a firm, unwavering stroke.

"Good," she whispered, looking down at the signature that sealed his fate. "Now let's go give him his engagement party."
