Chapter 5 - The Corporate Purge

By Monday morning, the fallout from the arrest of Richard, Evelyn, and Seth Hale dominated every financial news outlet in the United States.

WALL STREET JOURNAL: HALE GAMING DYNASTY COLLAPSES IN DRAMATIC MONEY LAUNDERING AND ATTEMPTED MURDER SCANDAL.

FORBES: CARA HALE SURVIVES ATTEMPTED ASSAULT, TAKES FULL CONTROL OF $4 BILLION CASINO EMPIRE.

I sat in the massive corner office on the top floor of the Hale Grand Resort.

The nameplate on the mahogany door had been changed. It no longer read Richard Hale, Chairman. It now read in sharp, polished brass: CARA HALE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER.

The room was bathed in bright morning sunlight. Standing before my desk were Monica Reyes, now officially appointed as Senior Vice President of Global Risk & Compliance, and Leo Martinez, whom I had promoted to Director of Facility Security & Environmental Operations.

"The federal indictments were formally handed down an hour ago," Monica reported, handing me a legal dossier. "Seth is facing twenty-five years to life for Attempted First-Degree Murder, Wire Fraud, and Money Laundering. Because the Solano syndicate is involved, the Department of Justice has seized all his personal assets."

"And my parents?" I asked, keeping my voice professional.

"Richard accepted a plea deal thirty minutes ago," Monica said. "He agreed to testify against Seth and plead guilty to Accomplice to Attempted Murder and Corporate Fraud in exchange for a fifteen-year sentence. Evelyn is pleading guilty to Obstruction of Justice and will serve eight years at a federal facility in California."

I looked out the panoramic window toward the lake.

For years, I had thought my family's approval was something I needed to earn through endless work and silent sacrifice. I had let them treat me like a glorified employee while they enjoyed the luxury of my labor. Now, sitting in the CEO chair, I felt no sorrow for their fall. Only a profound, liberating clarity.

"What about the resort staff, Leo?" I asked, turning my chair back toward my new executive team.

"The staff is celebrating, Ms. Hale," Leo smiled. "Word spread about how you saved the maintenance archives before taking down the board. For the first time in ten years, people actually feel proud to wear the Hale badge."

"Good," I said, opening a fresh leather binder on my desk. "Because starting today, we're changing how this company operates. Increase the base wage for all operational staff by fifteen percent. Implement a full internal review of every executive account. And cancel every third-party vendor contract tied to the previous board."

"Consider it done, CEO," Monica grinned.
