Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

I wore a tailored, floor-length emerald green dress that matched the color of my grandfather’s corporate seal. My dark hair fell in soft, elegant waves around my shoulders, completely concealing the small bandage behind my left ear. My stride was slow, deliberate, and unshakeable.
Beside me walked my grandfather, Winston Hale, leaning slightly on his gold-topped cane, surrounded by three federal prosecutors and the Chief of the Henderson Police Department.
My mother let out a sound that wasn't human—a strangled, terrifying shriek of pure, unadulterated horror. She collapsed backward into her chair, knocking a bottle of champagne onto the flagstones.
My father, Richard, went so pale he looked like a marble monument. His hands trembled violently as he clutched the edge of the dining table. "Cara... you... you're..."
"Alive, Dad," I said smoothly, my voice carrying clearly through the silent night air. "Disappointing, isn't it? The lake current was supposed to drag my body into the intake valves before sunrise."
Seth backed up against the terrace railing—the exact same railing he had pushed me over twenty-four hours earlier. "This is a setup! Grandfather, she's trying to frame us! She stole twelve million dollars from the casino reserve accounts! We found the shell invoices in her office yesterday!"
Winston stepped forward, his cane striking the flagstones with a heavy, authoritative THUD.
"Silence, you pathetic worm!" Winston roared, his voice echoing across the resort water. "Do you take me for a fool, Seth?! Do you think I didn't review the forensic audit before I signed the succession papers?!"
Monica Reyes stepped out from behind the state troopers, pulling a thick leather binder from her bag and setting it squarely in front of Senator Thomas and the Chief of Police.
"For the past three hours, federal investigators have been executing search warrants on Silver Apex Logistics, Marlowe Hospitality, and Blue Meridian Consulting," Monica stated cleanly. "We have recovered IP logs, mobile banking authorization codes, and digital signature metadata. Every single wire transfer was executed from Seth Hale's personal device, routing funds directly to offshore accounts owned by the Solano sports-betting syndicate in Costa Rica."
The Chief of Police looked at the state troopers. "Take them into custody."
Four uniformed officers stepped forward, pulling steel handcuffs from their utility belts.
"No! Wait!" Richard screamed, grabbing his wife’s hand, his aristocratic composure completely shattering into ugly, frantic sobbing. "Evelyn didn't know anything! It was Seth! Seth owed the money! He told us they were going to kill him if we didn't help him cover the debt!"
"Richard, shut up!" Evelyn shrieked, slapping her husband's arm in a blind panic. "He's lying! Richard disabled the cameras! He planned the whole thing!"
The forty guests watched in stunned, disgusted silence as my parents tore each other apart in front of the entire Nevada business elite, hurling accusations, tears, and curses at one another while the officers pinned their arms behind their backs and snapped the steel cuffs around their wrists.
Seth tried to run toward the side service stairs, but Leo Martinez simply stepped into his path, grabbed him by his tuxedo jacket, and forced him down onto his knees against the stone floor.
Seth looked up at me, his eyes wide, bloodshot, and filled with wild, desperate tears. "Cara... please... I’m your brother! You can't let them take me to prison! They'll kill me in there!"
I walked over until I was standing right in front of him. I leaned down slightly, looking straight into his terrified eyes.
"You've always had a problem, Seth," I whispered, echoing the exact words he had spoken before shoving me off the roof. "You keep standing where other people need to go."
The officers yanked Seth to his feet and dragged him, kicking and screaming, through the grand ballroom doors, followed by my weeping mother and my broken father.
The terrace fell completely quiet.
My grandfather turned to the remaining board members, his head held high, his voice steady as granite.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Winston announced. "The board meeting is now in session. And I present to you the sole Chief Executive Officer of Hale Gaming & Hospitality—my granddaughter, Cara Hale."
The applause started slowly, led by Senator Thomas, before swelling into a thunderous ovation that echoed across the dark waters of the lake.
