Chapter 7 - The Bargain with the Devil

The grandfather clock in the corridor struck midnight. Lucy was fast asleep in her grand bed, clutching a stuffed bear Gabriel had personally ordered from the city’s finest boutique. Outside her door, two armed guards stood vigil like stone sentinels.

Downstairs, the estate was bathed in low amber lamplight. I sat across from Gabriel at the grand dining table, two untouched cups of black coffee sitting between us.

"If Daniel hid it in Grand Central," I said quietly, "then why hasn't he gone back to get it himself?"

"Because Thorne has had that entire concourse under twenty-four-hour surveillance for eighteen months," Gabriel explained, tapping his fingers against the polished mahogany. "Daniel knows that the moment he walks into that locker room, Thorne’s mercenaries will bag him before he can turn the key. He needs an innocent courier. Someone who can walk in without raising alarms."

"He thinks I will go for him," I realized, the horror dawning on me. "He sent the key to Lucy to force my hand. He knows I'd do anything to keep him away from her."

"Exactly," Gabriel said. "And Thorne knows it too. That's why Thorne hasn't attacked this house yet. He's waiting for you to make the retrieval. The moment you pull that ledger out of locker 4812, Thorne will strike, take the book, and eliminate you and Daniel in one sweep."

I stared at the steam rising from the coffee cup. "Then what choice do we have? We can't destroy the locker without alerting them. We can't ignore it."

"We use it," Gabriel said simply.

I blinked, looking at his handsome, uncompromising face. "Use it how?"

"We stage an offensive," Gabriel leaned in, his hazel eyes gleaming with cold ambition. "Tomorrow night is the Annual Harbor Trust Charity Ball. Julian Thorne is the guest of honor. Victoria Vance will be on his arm. Every major investor in New York will be in that ballroom."

"And what does that have to do with the locker?"

"While Thorne is celebrating his anticipated triumph on the dance floor, Marco and my private tactical team will secure Grand Central. But we need a distraction big enough to draw Thorne’s personal security away from the concourse."

"What kind of distraction?"

Gabriel’s gaze softened slightly, though his voice remained firm. "You. And me."

"Mr. Caruso..."

"Call me Gabriel," he interrupted gently. "Elena, I am going to walk into that charity ball with you on my arm. Not as a domestic worker. Not as a temporary guest. But as the future mistress of Caruso Holdings."

The room seemed to tilt on its axis. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs. "Are you out of your mind? Society will tear us to shreds! They know who I was two days ago!"

"Society bows to power, Elena," Gabriel countered fiercely. "They will whisper, yes. They will look through their lorgnettes. But Thorne will be so blinded by rage—so obsessed with proving that I’ve lost my sanity over a common woman—that he will divert his best men to monitor us at the ball. That leaves the Grand Central perimeter weak."

"And if it goes wrong?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "If Daniel shows up? If Thorne realizes it's a trap?"

Gabriel stood up, walked around the table, and stopped beside my chair. He reached down, taking my trembling hand into his own warm, strong grip.

"Then I will finish what Daniel started," Gabriel promised, his thumb gently tracing the back of my knuckles. "I spent ten years building this empire to protect the things that matter. Tonight, I realized that stone and steel mean nothing if I can't keep a child’s music from being stolen."

I looked into his eyes and saw no hesitation, no deceit—only the terrifying, magnificent certainty of a man who would burn the world to keep his word.
