Chapter 6 - The Shadow at the Gates

The caller was the front gate security lodge.
"Mr. Caruso," the guard’s voice crackled through the speakerphone. "We have a situation. A courier just dropped off a wooden crate addressed specifically to Miss Lucy Cross."
The air in the library went dead.
Gabriel’s jaw tightened. "Do not open it. Scan it with the explosive detection unit immediately."
"Already cleared for ordnance, sir. It's clean. But there's... something unusual inside. It's a music box."
Ten minutes later, the crate sat in the center of Gabriel's private study. Marco carefully pried open the wooden slats with a crowbar, revealing an antique music box made of inlaid ivory and mother-of-pearl. It was exquisite, archaic, and undeniably expensive.
"Lucy shouldn't see this," I said, my voice shaking with protective instinct.
"She won't," Gabriel agreed, stepping closer. "Marco, open the latch."
Using a gloved hand, Marco clicked the brass latch open. The lid lifted slowly. A tiny mechanical ballerina, painted in peeling gold, spun on a circular mirror as the delicate, haunting notes of Swan Lake chimed into the quiet room.
Inside the velvet-lined compartment lay a single piece of heavy parchment, scrawled with handwriting that turned my stomach into ice.
*To my little dancer,* the note read. *Daddy hasn't forgotten you. See you very soon.*
Beside the note lay a small brass key, stamped with a four-digit number: **4812**.
"He knows she was at the gala," I whispered, clutching my arms around myself as an overwhelming wave of nausea hit me. "He was watching. Or someone told him."
"Victoria Vance," Gabriel muttered, his eyes flashing with lethal fury. "Her family holds shares in the regional surveillance network. She probably leaked the gala’s guest footage to Thorne’s network out of sheer spite."
"He's coming for Lucy," I choked out, tears finally breaking through my defenses. "Gabriel, he doesn't love her! He never wanted a child! If he's sending her gifts, it’s because he wants to use her as a shield or a bargaining chip!"
Gabriel didn't hesitate. He stepped forward and wrapped his arms around me, pulling me firmly against the solid wall of his chest. For a moment, the entire world shrank to the beat of his steady, powerful heart beneath his linen shirt. I buried my face in his shoulder, letting the terror that had choked me for five years pour out in silent sobs.
"He won't touch her," Gabriel whispered into my hair, his grip unyielding. "I give you my word, Elena. Over my dead body will that man lay a hand on your daughter."
When I finally pulled back, wiping my damp cheeks with embarrassment, Gabriel was looking at the small brass key with sharp, analytical detachment.
"Key 4812," he murmured. "It’s not a safe deposit box. Safe deposit keys have double notches and master-groove stamps."
Marco leaned in. "Could it be a locker? Bus terminal? Train station?"
"No," Gabriel said, his eyes darkening as an old memory clicked into place. "It's an antique locker from the old Grand Central baggage annex. Built in the 1940s. Caruso Logistics managed the renovation of that wing six years ago."

He looked at me, a grim realization settling over his features. "Daniel didn't hide his ledger in a bank. He hid it in my building."
