Chapter 4 - Secrets in the East Wing

My blood ran cold. The warmth that had briefly touched the solarium vanished beneath an icy spike of dread. *He knows,* my mind screamed. *He found the records.*
"I’m here to earn a living, Mr. Caruso," I managed, though my voice sounded hollow to my own ears. "To do the job I was hired for."
Gabriel didn't answer right away. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing out into the dark storm rolling across the Hudson. "Eleven months ago, you applied for the junior steward position. You had references from two modest hotels in Queens. But your social security number was only issued four years ago. Your tax trail before that doesn't exist."
I gripped the back of Lucy's armchair, my knuckles turning white. "There was a fire. Records get lost."
"Fires destroy paper, Elena. They don't erase digital fingerprints across three states," Gabriel turned back, his piercing hazel eyes locking onto mine. "Julian Thorne didn't come to this gala just to drink my whiskey. His private investigators have been tailing you for three weeks. Did you know that?"
"No," I whispered, genuinely shocked. "Why would Thorne care about me?"
"Because Thorne was business partners with Daniel Cross five years ago," Gabriel said slowly, watching my face for every micro-expression.
The name hit me like a physical blow. Daniel Cross. The man whose ring I had once worn, the man who had traded his soul—and nearly mine—to organized crime syndicates before vanishing into the wind when the federal indictments dropped. The father who had left me pregnant, terrified, and hunted by his creditors.
"Mommy?" Lucy murmured, sensing the shift in my posture. "You're squeezing my chair too hard."
"I'm sorry, baby," I loosened my grip, kneeling beside her again to hide the tremor in my lips.
Gabriel walked over, stopping just behind me. "Thorne thinks Daniel left something behind before he disappeared. Bearer bonds. Encrypted account ledgers. He thinks you know where they are. And he intends to use you—or your daughter—to pry open that vault."
"I have nothing," I turned to look up at Gabriel, tears of raw fury and fear pricking my eyes. "Daniel left me with twenty-four dollars in a checking account and a warrant with my name on it because he forged my signature on his dummy corporations! I ran. I spent four years hiding in church shelters and night shifts just to keep Lucy safe! I swear on my life, Mr. Caruso, I don't have his money!"
"I know," Gabriel said softly.
The simple, unyielding certainty in his voice caught me completely off guard. "You... you know?"
"I ran my own background check the week you arrived," Gabriel admitted, a faint shadow crossing his chiseled jaw. "I know Daniel Cross. I knew him long before he stole from Thorne. And I know the kind of bastard who leaves a woman to face wolves alone."
He knelt down, bringing himself to our level, his dark gaze unblinking.
"You brought Lucy into this house thinking the Caruso name was a big enough fortress to hide behind," he said. "You were right. But the fortress is about to be besieged. Thorne won't stop with petty insults at galas. He plays dirty, Elena. And now that he knows you're here, under my roof, he will use every weapon he has."
"Then I’ll leave," I said instantly, panic fluttering in my chest like a trapped bird. "I’ll pack our bags tonight. We can catch a bus to Chicago before dawn—"
"No," Gabriel’s voice was an iron wall. "You leave this estate, and Thorne’s men will pick you up at the first rest stop. You wouldn't make it past New Jersey."
"Then what do I do?" I cried, my voice trembling with the terrifying realization that our safe haven had turned into a gilded trap.
Gabriel reached out, his hand hovering for a second before he gently tapped the tip of Lucy's nose, drawing a sleepy giggle from the little girl.
May you like
"You stay," Gabriel said, looking straight into my eyes. "And starting tomorrow morning, you stop wearing a maid's uniform."
