Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Penthouse

While Robert took his legal strike team into Manhattan, the private security detail escorted Chloe and me to Robert’s fortified penthouse in Tribeca.

The apartment was a fortress: biometric elevator locks, reinforced steel doors, and around-the-clock guards. But inside, Chloe was still trembling. She walked into the guest bedroom, peeled off the stained hospital scrubs, and stood in front of the full-length mirror.

I stood in the doorway, watching her gaze at her bruised reflection. The purple marks on her neck looked like finger-strangle imprints.

"Mom," she said, her voice small and broken. "He looked at me with so much hate last night. When he held me down... he was smiling. He actually smiled when Victoria slapped me. How could I have been so blind? I thought he loved me."

I walked over, wrapped a warm fleece robe around her shoulders, and pulled her gently against me.

"Abusers don't wear name tags, Chloe," I told her firmly. "Lewis is a sociopath. He studied you. He knew you were generous, gentle, and came from wealth. He wore a mask until the ink was dry on the marriage license. This is not your fault. Do you hear me? Not a single drop of this is your fault."

Suddenly, the intercom near the kitchen chimed.

I froze.

The building concierge’s voice came through the speaker: *"Mrs. Miller, there is a courier here with an urgent, hand-delivered package addressed specifically to Miss Chloe Miller. It is marked 'Confidential Legal Notice'."*

I walked to the panel, hitting the talk button. "Who is the sender?"

*"It says Dudley & Associates, Attorneys at Law."*

"Have security scan the package," I ordered. "Bring it up."

Five minutes later, an armed guard handed me a thick, sealed envelope. Inside was a single flash drive and a handwritten note on Victoria Dudley’s personal monogrammed stationery.

The note read:

*To my lovely daughter-in-law,*

*Before your father makes a mistake that destroys your life forever, plug this drive in. We didn't just plan for your money, darling. We planned for your obedience. If a single charge is filed against Lewis or me, this video goes to every media outlet, every social platform, and every client of your father's firm.*

*You have two hours to drop the restraining order.*

My hands shook as I carried the drive to the laptop on the marble kitchen island.

Chloe came over, leaning over my shoulder. "What is it?"

"Don't look," I warned her, but it was too late.

I plugged the flash drive into the port. A folder opened automatically, containing a single video file dated three months ago, taken inside what looked like a luxury hotel room in Miami during Chloe's bachelorette weekend.
