Chapter 7 - The Forged Deed

Just as the doctor came in with Chloe’s discharge paperwork, Marcus Vance’s phone buzzed with an urgent notification. He swiped through his tablet, and his face instantly hardened.

"What is it?" Robert demanded.

"The county recorder's office," Vance said, turning the tablet toward us. "At 8:01 AM, when the automated electronic filing system opened, a deed transfer was submitted for Chloe's condo."

"What?!" Chloe sat up straight, wincing as she jostled her broken wrist. "How? I never signed anything!"

"They used an electronic notary service based out of Nevada," Vance explained, scrolling rapidly. "A forged digital signature under Chloe's name, accompanied by a scanned copy of her driver's license and passport—which Lewis undoubtedly had access to during wedding planning."

"Can they sell it?" I asked, panic clawing at my throat.

"They aren't trying to sell it," Vance replied grimly. "They’ve already executed a commercial loan agreement with Apex Capital—a predatory hard-money lender known for funding high-risk transactions within hours without traditional title verification. The loan is for $1.2 million. The funds are scheduled to be wired to Victoria Dudley’s offshore account in the Cayman Islands at noon today."

"Can the bank stop the wire?" Robert asked.

"Not without an emergency court injunction, and court doesn't open for emergency motions until 10:00 AM," Vance checked his watch. "It’s 8:30 AM now. Apex Capital moves fast. If that money hits the Caymans, it will vanish into three shell companies before the judge can sign the stay."

Robert turned to his head of security. "Where are Lewis and Victoria right now?"

"Our spotters have them at the Dudley townhouse on East 64th Street," the security chief reported. "A luxury courier just arrived. Likely delivering the closing documents for the Apex loan."

Robert pulled his overcoat back on. The quiet, wealthy businessman was gone; in his place stood the ruthless street-fighter who had clawed his way out of Queens to build a billion-dollar empire.

"Marcus, draft the injunction. Sarah, take Chloe to my private residence under full guard."

"Where are you going, Robert?" I asked, seeing the lethal fire in his eyes.

"To give my new son-in-law a wedding gift," Robert said quietly.
