Chapter 11 - The Trap at the High-Rise

"He's running!" Vance yelled.

The troopers tackled Victoria to the carpet, securing the zip-ties as she cursed and screamed profanities that shattered any remaining illusion of her aristocratic breeding. Robert’s security detail gave chase through the terrace doors, but Lewis had vanished down the service stairs leading to the underground parking garage.

Tires squealed in the distance. Lewis was gone.

Back in Tribeca, news of Victoria’s arrest flashed across the television screen. Chloe sat on the sofa, watching her mother-in-law being escorted into a police precinct in handcuffs, her Chanel suit disheveled, hiding her face from flashing paparazzi cameras.

"She's in custody," I said, breathing a sigh of relief. "It’s over, Chloe. The injunction went through. The condo is safe. The police are looking for Lewis right now; his passport has been flagged."

Chloe didn't smile. She stared at her phone on the coffee table.

Suddenly, a text notification lit up the screen from an unknown number:

*“I’m at your condo, Chloe. The $1.8 million penthouse you loved more than your marriage. If you want the original flash drive with the unedited footage—and the signed confession I wrote clearing your name—come alone. You have thirty minutes. If the police show up, I burn the drive, and I burn the building down with me inside.”*

Attached to the message was a photo: Lewis standing inside Chloe’s luxury condominium living room, holding a red gasoline container and a military-grade road flare.

"Mom," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide with fresh panic. "He's at my apartment. He's going to destroy it."

"We call the police immediately," I said, grabbing my phone.

"No!" Chloe grabbed my arm. "If police sirens pull up, he’ll light that flare. The whole high-rise has families on every floor! He’s insane, Mom! He has nothing left to lose!"

Robert arrived back at the Tribeca penthouse ten minutes later. After hearing about the text, he immediately mobilized his tactical team.

"We don't play his game," Robert said grimly. "We coordinate with the NYPD SWAT unit. They will take positions on the adjacent rooftop. But to keep him from lighting the flare, Chloe has to engage him."

"No!" I cried out. "I won't let my daughter go anywhere near that monster!"

"I have to, Mom," Chloe said, standing up, her jaw set with a courage I hadn't seen since this nightmare began. "I’ll wear a hidden wire. Marcus Vance and the police will be outside the door. If I can keep him talking for three minutes, the tactical team can breach through the terrace windows."

Thirty minutes later, the freight elevator of the high-rise opened on the 42nd floor.

Chloe stepped out into the carpeted corridor. Beneath her oversized black coat, an audio transmitter was taped securely to her ribs. Downstairs, three SWAT vans and two surveillance units sat silently in the shadows of 84th Street. I sat inside the mobile command unit with Robert, headphones clamped to our ears, listening to every breath our daughter took.

Chloe approached the heavy door of Penthouse 4B. The door was unlocked, resting open by half an inch.

The stench of gasoline hit her through the crack.

Chloe pushed the door open. "Lewis?" she called out, her voice trembling slightly.

Lewis was standing in the center of the spacious, panoramic living room. But he wasn't alone.

Sitting in an armchair, calmly holding a lighter in her manicured hand, was Victoria Dudley.

Chloe froze. "Victoria? How... you were arrested!"

"Bail bondsmen work very fast when you pay them cash from a secret safe, darling," Victoria purred, a grotesque, victorious smile spreading across her bruised face.

Behind Chloe, the penthouse door slammed shut with a sickening thud.

Lewis stepped out from behind the door, locking all three deadbolts from the inside. In his hand was an RF signal jammer—its green LED blinking violently.

Instantly, the audio feed in our surveillance van went dead, exploding into static.

"Chloe!" I screamed into the dead headset. "Chloe!"
