Chapter 9 - The Boardroom Showdown

The annual emergency shareholder meeting was held in the grand glass boardroom on the top floor of Montgomery Hospitality Group’s headquarters.

Amber Cole sat at the far end of the long marble table, wearing a sharp designer suit, looking smug and triumphant. Beside her sat her father, William Cole, a wealthy Texan oil speculator with a loud voice and cold, calculating eyes.

“Mrs. Montgomery,” William Cole boomed, leaning back in his chair with a patronizing grin. “Let’s not waste time. Apex Capital now controls eighteen percent of Montgomery Group’s equity. With the backing of two minority board members who are eager for a quick payout, we have enough leverage to force a vote on liquidating Serenity Shores.”

Amber smirked, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. “It’s just business, Claire,” she said smoothly, using my first name with deliberate disrespect. “You kicked me out of your resort, but now I’m going to buy it, tear it down, and build luxury condos in its place. You’re too old to run an empire anyway.”

I sat at the head of the table, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray suit, completely untroubled. Beside me sat Thomas Vance—and next to Thomas sat Mark, holding a thick leather binder.

Amber’s eyes widened slightly when she saw Mark sitting at the executive table, looking sharp, composed, and completely professional.

“Mark?” Amber sneered. “What are you doing here? Did your mother hire you as her errand boy again?”

Mark didn't flinch. He opened his binder and turned on the master presentation screen at the head of the boardroom.

“Mr. Cole, Miss Cole,” Mark announced, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of a veteran analyst. “Before we call a board vote on the liquidation of Serenity Shores, let’s review the financial mechanics of Apex Capital’s share acquisitions.”

Mark pressed a button, projecting a complex financial flow chart onto the screen.

“Over the past six weeks, Apex Capital acquired eighteen percent of our equity using three short-term credit lines issued by First National Bank,” Mark explained clearly. “However, those credit lines were secured using collateral from your Texas oil leases—specifically, Lease 409 and Lease 512.”

William Cole’s smug grin vanished. His face paled slightly.

“Yesterday afternoon,” Mark continued, sliding certified federal registry documents across the marble table toward William Cole, “our investigative team verified that Leases 409 and 512 were officially condemned by the Environmental Protection Agency three months ago due to illegal waste dumping. In short, your collateral is worth zero dollars.”

The room fell into dead silence. The minority board members who had been considering siding with Apex Capital gasped, instantly pushing their papers away from William Cole.

“You... you fabricated your loan applications to First National Bank,” Thomas Vance added smoothly, leaning forward. “Which constitutes bank fraud, securities misrepresentation, and illegal market manipulation. The Securities and Exchange Commission was formally notified at 9:00 AM this morning.”

Amber stood up so fast her leather chair slammed into the wall behind her. “That’s a lie! Mark, you’re lying to protect her!”

“I’m protecting my family’s legacy, Amber,” Mark said, looking her straight in the eye without a trace of hesitation. “Something you never understood.”

Federal marshals and SEC agents, who had been waiting quietly in the reception lounge, walked into the boardroom.

“William Cole, Amber Cole,” the lead agent announced. “You are under arrest for federal bank fraud and conspiracy to commit securities fraud.”

Amber screamed in frustration as steel handcuffs clicked around her manicured wrists. She looked at me, her eyes filled with rage, but I simply sat tall, watching her be escorted out of my boardroom—and out of our lives forever.
