Chapter 4 - The Midnight Discovery

By 8:00 PM, the sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of indigo and violet. I was sitting in the plush leather armchair of the penthouse study, reviewing architectural schematics for our upcoming resort expansion in the Bahamas, when a soft knock sounded at the private suite door.
I opened it to find Sarah holding a secure corporate tablet and a fresh cup of jasmine tea.
“Chairman Montgomery,” Sarah said politely. “Mr. Vance’s office transmitted the preliminary audit report via the secure encrypted network. He marked it urgent.”
“Thank you, Sarah,” I said, taking the tablet and the tea. “Please, make sure the front desk staff are taking care of themselves. That lobby incident was chaotic.”
“Don't worry about us, Chairman,” Sarah smiled warmly. “Everyone is just relieved you’re okay. We’ve all worked under your leadership for years; seeing someone disrespect you like that... well, let’s just say nobody is shedding any tears for Mr. Montgomery.”
I nodded appreciatively and closed the door.
I sat back down at the desk, unlocked the secure tablet, and opened the PDF document titled Montgomery Family Trust & Executive Subsidiary Forensic Review: Mark Montgomery.
As I scrolled through the pages, my breath caught in my throat.
I knew Mark lived comfortably, but I had no idea he was drowning in a sea of fabricated luxury. According to the audit:
Over the past three years, Mark had secretly taken out three high-interest secondary loans totaling over eight hundred thousand dollars to purchase a luxury yacht and a second vacation home in Palm Beach—loans backed illegally by corporate equity shares held in trust under my name.
Amber’s extravagant spending—her designer clothes, private club memberships, and cosmetic procedures—had been funneled through dummy LLC accounts disguised as “marketing consultations” for Montgomery Hospitality Group.
Most shockingly, Mark had quietly altered his primary beneficiary designation on his corporate life insurance and emergency trust fund last month, removing me entirely and naming Amber—and her brother—as sole primary beneficiaries.
My hands trembled slightly, not out of weakness, but out of cold, righteous fury.
My son hadn't just grown distant and ungrateful. He had committed corporate fraud, manipulated trust documents, and actively gambled away the very empire I had built from the ground up to secure his future.
My phone rang violently on the desk.
It was Mark.
The screen flashed his name and photo—a picture from six years ago before Amber had completely warped his perspective.
I let it ring out. It went to voicemail.
Ten seconds later, it rang again. And again.
On the fourth time, I pressed answer and put the phone on speaker, laying it flat on the mahogany desk.
“Mom! Pick up the damn phone!” Mark’s voice screamed through the speaker, frantic, hysterical, and dripping with panic. “What is wrong with you? Why did security throw us out of the hotel? Why are my corporate credit cards declined? Why did HR just email me saying my executive accounts have been frozen pending an emergency audit?!”
I took a slow sip of my jasmine tea, letting the silence stretch out for several agonizing seconds.
“You tell me, Mark,” I finally spoke, my voice calm, smooth, and chillingly quiet.
“Tell you what? I didn't do anything!” Mark yelled, his voice cracking. “Amber is having a panic attack in the car! We’re sitting in a rest stop forty miles outside the resort with no hotel, no money, and our cards blocked! You can’t do this to your own son! You’re destroying my life over a stupid misunderstanding!”
“A misunderstanding?” I asked softly. “Is that what you call corporate equity fraud, unauthorized trust loans, and forging beneficiary designations behind my back?”
The line went dead silent.
All of Mark’s screaming, panicking, and blustering stopped instantly. The only sound coming through the speaker was his heavy, ragged breathing.
“Mom... what... what are you talking about?” Mark whispered, his voice trembling with genuine terror.
“I’m reading the forensic audit report right now, Mark,” I said. “Eight hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized loans backed by my trust. Dummy LLC accounts funneling company funds into your wife’s designer shopping sprees. And changing your trust beneficiaries to lock me out completely.”
“I... I can explain,” Mark stammered frantically. “It was just temporary! We were going to pay it back once my stock options vested! Amber had some debts—we needed liquidity—it wasn't a big deal—”
“It’s not a big deal,” I repeated, the cold fury in my voice finally breaking through. “I built seventeen properties from the ground up, working eighteen-hour days after your father died, so you would never know what it means to starve, to struggle, to be treated like nothing by people with money. And you used my sacrifice to fund your wife’s vanity and your own cowardice.”
“Mom, please! Don't ruin me! If HR hands this audit to the federal authorities, I’ll be facing felony fraud charges! I’ll go to prison!”
“Then I suggest you get comfortable with the idea, Mark,” I said evenly. “Because as of tomorrow morning, my legal team is handing the complete forensic package over to the state prosecutor’s office and the federal trade commission.”
“NO! MOM, WAIT—”
May you like
I hung up the phone.
I turned off the ringer, set the tablet down on the desk, and walked back out onto the balcony. The ocean waves crashed softly against the shore below, steady and eternal. The storm had finally broken, and the air was clean at last.
