Chapter 6 - The Clean Slate

Two weeks later.

Back in the city, the autumn air was crisp and refreshing. The corporate restructuring of Montgomery Hospitality Group had been executed swiftly and cleanly. Thomas Vance’s legal team successfully recovered all misappropriated funds, restructured the family trust to protect corporate assets permanently, and formally severed Mark’s executive ties with the company.

True to his word, Mark had filed for divorce from Amber. Stripped of their fabricated wealth and high-society illusions, both of them were forced to move into modest, rental apartments and take entry-level jobs—Mark as a mid-level logistics coordinator at an independent shipping firm, earning an honest living for the first time in his life.

I sat in my quiet, sunlit home office in the city, reviewing the final closing documents for the Serenity Shores expansion project.

My phone rang. I picked it up.

“Chairman Montgomery,” Sarah’s cheerful voice came through the line from Florida. “Just giving you a weekly property update. Occupancy rates at Serenity Shores are at ninety-eight percent, and the new garden terrace is fully booked for the entire season.”

“Wonderful work, Sarah,” I smiled. “Thank you for keeping everything running so smoothly.”

“Of course, Chairman. Oh—by the way, there’s a gentleman waiting in the lobby to see you. Says his name is Mark Montgomery.”

I paused, my pen hovering over the paper. “Mark?”

“Yes, ma'am. He didn't ask for executive favors. He asked if he could make an appointment to see his mother.”

A quiet warmth spread through my chest—not the blind, protective indulgence of the past, but the cautious, hopeful pride of a parent watching her child take his very first honest steps.

“Send him up, Sarah,” I said softly. “I’ll be waiting.”

I hung up the phone, walked over to the window, and watched the golden morning sunlight filter through the autumn leaves. The empire I built wasn't just made of brick, marble, and luxury resorts. It was made of resilience, truth, and the unyielding strength to stand tall, no matter who tried to look down on me.

And for the first time in a very long time, everything was exactly as it should be.
