Chapter 6 - The Gala of Betrayal

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glittered like a diamond under crystal chandeliers that had hung since the Gilded Age. Wall Street royalty, international venture capitalists, and high-society patrons filled the floor, sipping vintage Dom Pérignon while an eight-piece string ensemble played near the grand staircase.
At the center of the room stood Callum, radiant in a tailored Tom Ford tuxedo.
Beside him, looking like a triumphant queen, was Paige Renshaw. She wore an emerald-green silk dress that provocatively highlighted the white gauze bandage wrapped neatly around her forearm. She held a glass of water in her other hand, playing the role of the brave, traumatized victim to absolute perfection.
"Callum, you must be under so much strain," whispered Eleanor Vance, a prominent society matron whose husband held eight percent of Hargrove’s fund. "We heard poor Elena had... another episode. It must be so difficult dealing with an unstable wife while managing billions."
Callum lowered his gaze, affecting an expression of deep, mournful patience. "Thank you, Eleanor. Elena has had a difficult pregnancy. Her hormones have caused severe emotional instability. We’re providing her with the best medical care possible in Connecticut. For now, Paige has stepped up courageously to ensure our firm’s operations don't suffer."
Paige leaned against Callum’s arm, offering a frail, courageous smile. "I only want what’s best for Hargrove Capital, Eleanor. Callum has been my rock through this terrible misunderstanding."
From the shadows near the entrance of the ballroom, I stood watching them.
I wore the white silk maternity gown, draped perfectly over my swollen belly. My hair was swept up in an intricate chignon, held in place by diamond pins my father had gifted me. Around my neck hung the Sterling family sapphire—a deep blue jewel worth more than Paige’s entire life savings.
Beside me stood Jude, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his earpiece glowing faintly in the dim light. Behind us, Marcus Vance held his leather briefcase, looking like an executioner awaiting the nod.
"Are you ready, Mrs. Hargrove?" Jude whispered.
"I’ve never been more ready," I replied.
"Let’s begin," Marcus said, tapping his phone to send the command to the AV control booth.
I stepped through the double doors and walked down the marble steps into the ballroom.
The music didn't stop immediately, but the chatter died in a slow, undulating wave that rippled across the four hundred guests. Heads snapped toward the entrance. Whispers erupted like dry leaves catching fire.
"Is that... Elena?"
"Good God, she’s here!"
"Look at her... she doesn't look unstable at all."
Callum froze in the middle of his conversation with two German investors. His champagne glass tilted slightly, almost spilling. His eyes went wide with pure, naked fury as he saw me walking steadily toward him, chin high, looking every inch the billionaire heiress he thought he had caged.
Paige’s triumphant smile vanished instantly. Her face drained of all color, her hand dropping Callum’s arm as if burned.
"Elena?" Callum hissed as I stopped five feet in front of him. "What the hell are you doing here? I told you to stay in Connecticut!"
"Did you?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the suddenly silent crowd. "I must have forgotten, Callum. After all, you told everyone I had an 'emotional breakdown' after you pushed me into our estate’s pool to protect your mistress."
Gasps exploded across the room. Several guests turned to look at each other in sheer disbelief.
"Elena, shut your mouth!" Callum snarled, lunging forward to grab my wrist.
Before his fingers could even graze my skin, Jude stepped smoothly between us. With a swift, practiced movement, Jude caught Callum’s wrist, twisting it just enough to force the billionaire to take a stumbling step backward.
"Keep your hands off Mrs. Hargrove," Jude said, his voice ringing with military authority.
"You're fired, Mercer!" Callum bellowed, clutching his wrist, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson. "Security! Get this lunatic and my wife out of my ballroom right now!"
"Nobody is touching anyone, Mr. Hargrove," Marcus Vance’s deep, booming voice echoed from the stairs. Marcus walked forward, holding a legal injunction sealed by the Supreme Court of New York. "Because as of five minutes ago, you no longer have the authority to issue orders in this building."
"Marcus?" Callum stammered, looking around wildly as journalists began snapping photos. "What are you talking about? This is my gala! This is my firm!"
"Not anymore," I said, looking into my husband’s panicked eyes. "Look at the screen, Callum."
Above the stage, the massive ninety-foot digital screen—which had been displaying Hargrove Capital’s logo—flickered once.
