Chapter 10 - The Trap Snaps

The storm broke over Connecticut with torrential fury, rattling the heavy leaded-glass windows of the Sterling mansion. Thunder rumbled across the estate, vibrating through the limestone foundation.

Downstairs in the grand foyer, Jude coordinated with his four-man tactical team via secure radio headsets.

"Perimeter cameras two and six are experiencing interference from the lightning," Jude’s second-in-command reported over the comms. "Motion sensors on the south gate just tripped."

"Send a team of two to sweep the south gate immediately," Jude commanded, his hand resting on the holster concealed beneath his jacket. "Do not engage unless confirmed hostile. Mrs. Hargrove is resting in the master suite upstairs."

Upstairs, I sat in the dim light of the library, sipping herbal tea while Marcus Vance worked on his laptop, finalizing the asset freeze documents for his disgraced brother Robert.

"Robert was arrested at the gate in Teterboro," Marcus said, looking up from the screen with deep exhaustion etched into his features. "He broke down within ten minutes of questioning. He confessed to everything—hiring Paige Renshaw, facilitating the corporate leaks, and manipulating Callum’s ego to push you out of the picture."

"How could he do that to our family, Marcus?" I asked softly. "My father treated Robert like a brother."

"Greed makes monsters out of men, Elena," Marcus sighed. "Arthur was a giant. Robert spent thirty years living in Arthur’s shadow, managing billions of dollars that were never his. He wanted what your father built."

Suddenly, the lights throughout the mansion flickered once, twice, and then plunged into total, suffocating darkness.

The heavy silence was broken only by the hum of the emergency backup generators kicking in three seconds later, casting the hallway in an eerie, low-voltage amber glow.

My heart seized. "Marcus?"

"Stay where you are," Marcus said, standing up and reaching into his desk drawer for an antique silver revolver Arthur had kept there for forty years.

The library door clicked open.

Jude stepped inside, his weapon drawn, his face tight. "The main transformer on the road was sabotaged. Someone cut the primary power lines. We need to move you to the safe room in the basement right now."

"Is it Callum?" I asked, rising slowly from the sofa, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Whoever it is, they know the estate's blind spots," Jude said, guiding me into the hallway. "Stay close behind me."

We moved down the long portrait gallery, our shadows stretching long and grotesque under the amber emergency lights. Outside, the rain lashed the windows like thrown gravel.

As we reached the top of the grand staircase overlooking the marble foyer, the heavy oak front doors burst inward with a splintering crash.

A drenched, ragged figure stumbled into the foyer.

It was Callum.

His clothes were soaked through, clinging to his skeletal frame. His hair was plastered to his forehead, his face pale and sunken, his eyes wide with a manic, unhinged intensity. In his right hand, he clutched a heavy, rusted tire iron.

"ELENA!" he screamed, his voice bouncing off the marble walls like a cracked bell. "ELENA, I KNOW YOU'RE UP THERE!"

Jude immediately raised his weapon, aiming directly at Callum’s chest. "Drop the weapon, Callum! Drop it right now, or I will put a round through your shoulder!"

Callum didn't stop. He staggered toward the bottom of the grand staircase, laughing hysterically through chattering teeth.

"Mercer! The loyal watchdog!" Callum yelled, pointing the tire iron toward the ceiling. "Do you think I came here to hurt her? Look at me! Look at what she did to me!"

He dropped the tire iron. It clattered against the marble with a hollow, echoing thud.

Callum fell to his knees at the foot of the stairs, tears streaming down his rain-soaked face, looking up at me as I stood on the landing with Jude shielding my body.

"Elena... please," Callum wept, clawing at the bottom step. "Robert set me up. Paige set me up. The police took my car, my accounts, my reputation... everything! I have nothing left! I’m sleeping in a shelter! Me! Callum Hargrove!"

"You did this to yourself, Callum," I said, my voice echoing down the staircase with freezing finality. "The moment you chose Paige over your wife and child, you sealed your own fate."

"I was blind!" Callum sobbed, banging his forehead against the marble step. "I love you, Elena! I love our daughter! Please, drop the charges! Let me come home! I’ll sign whatever you want! I’ll be your employee! Just don't let them send me to prison!"

I looked down at the man who had once ruled Wall Street, the man who had shoved me into the dark water without a single shred of remorse.

"There is no home for you here, Callum," I said softly. "The Callum I loved died the moment you pushed me into the pool. You're nothing but a ghost now."

Red and blue emergency lights suddenly illuminated the storm outside, splashing through the tall foyer windows. Sirens wailed up the driveway.

Callum froze, his head snapping toward the door as six state troopers burst into the foyer with tactical rifles raised.

"Callum Hargrove, stay on the ground! Put your hands behind your head! DO IT NOW!"

Callum didn't fight. He collapsed flat against the cold marble, weeping like a broken child as the officers pinned his arms and locked the steel cuffs around his wrists. As they hauled him to his feet and dragged him out into the pouring rain, he screamed my name until his voice cracked into the darkness.

I turned around, leaning heavily against Jude’s steady arm.

"Take me upstairs," I whispered, feeling the first warm tear of relief slip down my cheek. "It’s over."
