Chapter 3 - The Silent Guardian

I pushed myself up against the adjustable mattress, wincing as the IV line pulled against the back of my hand. "How long were you standing there, Jude?"

"Long enough to hear him threaten you," Jude replied, his voice flat with suppressed rage. He walked over to the heavy oak chair in the corner of the room, set his tactical jacket across the back, and plugged the silver drive into a ruggedized tablet he pulled from his pack. "And long enough to decide that my loyalty to Callum Hargrove ended the second he laid hands on you."

"Jude, if Callum finds out you're helping me, he will destroy your career," I warned, though my heart desperately clung to his presence. "He has connections in private security firms across the East Coast. He’ll blacklist you."

"Let him try," Jude said, a hard edge cutting through his tone. "Before I worked private details for tech billionaires, I did two tours with the 75th Ranger Regiment. I’ve seen cowards before, Mrs. Hargrove. But I’ve never seen a man throw his pregnant wife to the wolves to save a corporate snake. Look at this."

He turned the screen toward me and pressed play.

The footage was captured from a wide-angle 4K lens mounted discreetly beneath the eaves of the service patio—an angle Callum had completely forgotten when he approved the estate's architectural renovation two years ago.

On the screen, the pool deck was visible under the soft glow of the hanging lantern lights. I saw myself standing by the stone balustrade, holding my phone. Then came Paige.

She walked up behind me, whispering something. The footage had no audio, but her body language was crystal clear. She leaned close, hissed words that made me pull away, and then glanced down at my phone. When I held the phone out of her reach, Paige didn't retreat.

She carefully surveyed the lawn. She saw Callum emerging from the French doors fifty yards away.

Then, with calculated, chilling precision, Paige reached out with her manicured hand, knocked the crystal champagne flute against the edge of the granite table, and deliberately dragged the jagged stem across her own forearm. She dropped the broken base, threw her head back, and shrieked.

A second later, Callum came charging into frame.

The video clearly showed me standing perfectly still, stunned, with my hands raised in confusion—until Callum lunged forward, placed both hands flat against my chest, and shoved with full force.

I watched myself plunge backward into the black water.

I watched Paige immediately collapse into Callum’s arms, sobbing theatrical tears while Callum wrapped his jacket around her, never once looking back toward the water.

Then came Jude, sprinting across the lawn, diving into the pool, and dragging me to the surface.

My hands shook violently as the video looped back to the beginning. "She cut herself. She deliberately cut herself to make him think I attacked her."

"She did," Jude confirmed, closing the tablet. "And here is the worse part: twenty minutes after the ambulance left, Callum ordered the IT team to wipe the central server's cloud backups under the guise of 'routine maintenance.' He thought he destroyed all the footage."

"Why would he wipe it if he truly believed Paige was innocent?" I asked, a bitter laugh escaping my lips.

"Because deep down, he knew," Jude said coldly. "Or he suspected. Either way, he couldn't afford for the truth to come out. Paige isn't just his mistress, Elena. She’s his conduit."

"Conduit for what?"

Jude pulled a second set of printed papers from his folder. "Those $600,000 consulting payments you found? That was just the tip of the iceberg. I spent the last three hours pulling internal security logs from Paige’s corporate badge. Over the past six months, she’s been accessing Hargrove Capital’s proprietary algorithmic trading files after hours. And every single consulting check was paid to an offshore entity called Apex Global Holdings."

I felt the blood drain from my face. "Apex Global... that was the shell company my father warned me about before he passed away. It’s tied to Julian Cross."

Julian Cross was Callum’s fiercest rival—a hedge fund titan who had tried to execute a hostile takeover of Hargrove Capital three years ago.

"Paige isn't Callum’s lover out of passion," I whispered, the puzzle pieces clicking together with terrifying precision. "She’s an industrial spy. She’s draining Callum’s company from the inside and feeding it to Julian Cross. And Callum is so blinded by his own ego that he’s handing her the keys to the kingdom."

"Exactly," Jude said. "And now she knows you suspect something. That’s why she wanted you out of the way tonight. If you had drowned, or if this stress causes you to lose the baby, Callum would have sent you to a private psychiatric retreat to 'recover.' That was their plan."

A knock sounded on the door. Jude instantly slipped the tablet back into his pack and stood at rigid parade rest near the window.

A young female nurse walked in, pushing a medication cart. She gave Jude a suspicious glance, then smiled warmly at me. "Mrs. Hargrove? You have a visitor in the waiting room. He says his name is Marcus Vance, and he insists he has power of attorney papers."

A surge of relief washed over me. Marcus Vance had been my father’s most trusted corporate attorney for twenty-five years.

"Send him in," I said, wiping the lingering moisture from my face.

May you like

I looked at Jude, my resolve solidifying into unbreakable steel. "Callum wants a war? Let’s give him one."
