Chapter 9 - Unraveling the Syndicate

The suppressed pistol flew out of Julian’s hand, clattering against the bedside table and sliding across the floor.
Julian grunted in pain, his eyes widening in shock, but his reflexes were terrifyingly quick. He lunged forward, tackling me hard against the wall. The impact knocked the wind out of my lungs, and my head slammed against the drywall.
His gloved hands clamped around my throat, cutting off my air.
"Stupid suburban bastard," he snarled, digging his thumbs into my windpipe. Black spots danced across my vision. I clawed at his face, scratching at his scar, but he was like an immovable stone wall.
Beneath the bed, Lily let out a piercing scream: "DADDY!"
"Lily... stay... there..." I choked out, my vision darkening.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed in the room.
Julian’s grip loosened. His eyes widened, and he slowly reached behind his head.
Claire stood behind him, holding the heavy porcelain base of the bedside lamp, which had shattered into jagged pieces across his skull. Blood was streaming down Julian's neck.
"Run, David!" Claire yelled, her face bloody and wild with desperation.
Julian turned with an animalistic growl and backhanded Claire with brutal force, sending her crashing into the medical monitors, which shrieked with high-pitched electronic alarms.
He reached inside his coat for a backup weapon.
*BANG.*
A thunderous gunshot tore through the room.
Julian froze. A dark red stain blossomed across his chest. He staggered backward, looked down at his ruined coat in disbelief, and collapsed face-first onto the linoleum floor with a heavy thud.
Standing in the doorway, bleeding from a graze on his forehead but holding his service pistol with both hands, was Detective Miller.
Behind him, sirens wailed outside the hospital windows. Red and blue strobe lights painted the room in chaotic patterns as a dozen heavily armed SWAT officers stormed down the corridor.
"Clear! Room secure!" Miller shouted, lowering his weapon and slumping against the doorframe, breathing heavily.
I dropped to my knees, gasping for air, clutching my bruised throat.
"Lily..." I coughed out. "Lily, come here."
The bed skirt lifted, and my daughter scrambled out into my arms, sobbing hysterically. I wrapped both arms around her, shielding her eyes from the blood and the chaos.
"It's over, baby. It's over," I wept into her hair. "You're safe."
Across the room, Claire groaned, slowly pushing herself up against the overturned cart. She looked at me, then at Lily, her eyes full of an agonizing mixture of regret and defeat.
Two SWAT officers immediately moved in, pinning her to the floor and snapping zip-ties around her wrists.
"Eleanor Vance, you are under arrest," an officer declared.
She didn't fight them. As they dragged her to her feet, she looked back at me, tears streaming down her bruised face.
"David... I really did love her," Claire whispered. "I really did."

I held Lily tighter and looked away.
