Chapter 7 - A Deadly Confrontation

"Detective!" I yelled, abandoning all pretense of hospital quiet.

Miller turned around, his phone still pressed to his ear. "What?"

"They're here! In the parking garage! A black van—they tracked my car!"

Miller didn't hesitate. He dropped the phone and unbuttoned his holster, his hand resting on his service weapon. "Code Black to Saint Jude Pediatric Wing, 3rd Floor!" he barked into his radio. "I need immediate backup and hospital security lockdown now!"

The red emergency lights in the corridor began flashing silently, and the heavy double doors at the end of the hall hissed shut as the lockdown protocol engaged.

"Get inside the room with your daughter," Miller commanded. "Lock the door and don't open it for anyone except uniformed officers."

I ran into Room 314, slammed the heavy wooden door, and engaged the deadbolt. Lily was sitting up, terrified by the flashing alarms.

"Daddy? What's happening?"

"It’s okay, Lily. We're playing a game, okay? I need you to slide under the bed and stay completely still."

She didn't argue. She squeezed her bunny and crawled beneath the steel frame of the hospital bed.

Outside in the corridor, shouting erupted.

Heavy thuds echoed against the security doors. Glass shattered. Then came the unmistakable sound of a gunshot.

A woman screamed.

My heart felt like it was going to burst through my ribs. I grabbed a heavy metal IV pole, stripping the plastic bags off, and gripped it like a spear, standing between the doorway and the bed where my daughter hid.

Footsteps approached fast—heavy, tactical boots against linoleum.

The handle jiggled violently.

"David," a voice called through the door.

It wasn't a stranger. It was Claire.

"David, open the door right now!" she pleaded, her voice sounding frantic, almost terrified. "They're going to kill me! If you don't give them the drive, they’ll kill all of us! Open the door!"

"Get away from us, Claire!" I roared. "The police are already here!"

"You don't understand who they are!" she screamed back, pounding on the heavy wood. "The police can't stop them! Julian doesn't leave witnesses!"

A sickening thud sounded outside, followed by Claire’s sharp gasp and the dull sound of a body hitting the wall.

"Shut up, Eleanor," a deep, calm male voice spoke from the other side of the wood. "You’ve made enough noise."

Then came two heavy, metallic kicks against the lock.

The wooden frame splintered with a violent crack.
