Chapter 5 - Lily’s Whispered Truth

"Give that to me," Claire demanded, her voice dropping into a low, guttural hiss. "You have no idea what you're messing with, David."

"Who is Eleanor Vance?" I replied, holding my ground. "Who are you running away to Geneva with? Why are you trying to drug our child?"

Claire took a slow step backward toward the vanity. Her right hand drifted subtly toward the open top drawer.

"You think you're the hero here?" she whispered, her eyes manic. "You think you can save her? If you don't give me what she took, neither of us will live to see next week. You don't know who these people are."

"The police are waiting at the hospital, Claire. CPS has already opened a file. It’s over."

Her laughter was short, bitter, and mocking. "You naive idiot. You think local cops can protect you?"

Suddenly, she lunged at me, clawing for the phone in my hand. I caught her by the wrists, shocked by the feral strength behind her movement. She struggled fiercely, knocking over the bedside lamp with a deafening crash.

"Where did she hide it?!" Claire shrieked in my face, spit flying from her mouth. "Where is the drive, David?!"

I twisted her arms behind her back, pinning her against the edge of the bed just long enough to grab my car keys from the dresser. "Stay away from Lily. If you come anywhere near that hospital, I will have you arrested on the spot."

I shoved her back onto the mattress and bolted out of the room, slamming the bedroom door shut. I didn't stop to grab a coat. I sprinted down the stairs, tore out through the front door, jumped into my car, and slammed the accelerator.

In the rearview mirror, I saw Claire standing on the front porch beneath the porchlight. She wasn't chasing me. She was holding her personal phone to her ear, speaking rapidly, staring straight at my retreating car with cold, unblinking malice.

I sped through red lights, my mind reeling.

When I reached the hospital parking lot, I practically ran through the sliding emergency doors. The pediatric wing was quiet. Detective Miller, a tired-looking man with silver hair and an unbuttoned trench coat, was standing outside Lily’s room talking with the night doctor.

"Mr. Carter?" the detective asked, turning as I approached out of breath. "We were waiting for you."

"She’s involved in something dangerous," I said, gasping for air. "My wife. Her name might not even be Claire. She's planning to flee the country with Lily."

Detective Miller held up a hand. "Slow down. Before we take your statement, your daughter just woke up. She said she needs to speak with you alone. She wouldn't talk to us until she saw you."

I pushed open the door to Room 314.

Lily was sitting upright in the adjustable bed, clutching her stuffed pink bunny to her chest. When she saw me, her eyes filled with tears, and she stretched out her arms.

"Daddy..." she whimpered.

I rushed to her bedside and gathered her into my arms, mindful of the bruises on her back. "I'm here, baby. You're safe. Daddy is never going to let anyone hurt you again."

Lily pressed her mouth against my ear, her voice barely louder than a breath.

"Daddy," she whispered. "Mom was looking for the little silver stick with the computer files. She shook me because I wouldn't tell her where it was."

"Where is it, Lily?"

Lily reached down into the plush tummy of her pink bunny, where the seam had been clumsily torn and restitched with loose pink thread. Her small fingers dug inside the cotton stuffing and pulled out a sleek, encrypted metallic thumb drive.

"Mom dropped it when she was screaming at a man on the porch last week," Lily whispered. "I heard her say this was the only thing keeping her alive."
