Chapter 9 - The Traitor at the Door

The heavy wood door slammed into Richard’s shoulder, knocking him sideways across the room.

Standing in the doorway was Detective Vance.

He was holding his badge in one hand and his service weapon in the other. Behind him were four uniformed officers, their tasers and pistols unholstered.

"Nobody move!" Vance shouted. "Hands where I can see them!"

Richard scrambled to his feet, clutching his injured arm. A sickening smile of relief broke across his face. "Vance! Thank God! Garrett has a gun—he’s insane! He broke my security detail's necks in the hall! Arrest him!"

Vance didn't look at me. He kept his eyes locked on Richard.

"Step away from the bed, Richard," Vance said calmly.

"Did you hear me?" Richard yelled, his voice turning shrill. "He’s armed! Shoot him!"

"We pulled the traffic cameras from Fourth Street, Richard," Vance said, his voice level and cold. "There was no black sedan leaving the distillery alley at 2:00 AM. But there was a gray Mercedes driving through three red lights between Garrett’s neighborhood and the industrial district."

Richard’s eyes darted left and right. "That's circumstantial! I told you, I went to check on the house!"

"And what about the six wire transfers from your trust account to an offshore shell registered to Frank Castiglione?" Vance stepped into the room. "The FBI financial crimes unit flagged them three hours ago. Sophia sent an encrypted copy of your embezzled ledger to the federal prosecutor's office two days before she was attacked."

Richard’s face went dead white. "She... she what?"

From the bed, Sophia let out a shuddering, broken breath. "I told you... I wouldn't let you... destroy us, Dad."

Vance nodded to his officers. "Richard Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit extortion, and tampering with evidence."

Two officers moved forward, grabbing Richard by the arms and slamming him face-first against the white wall. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed loudly through the sterile room.

Richard thrashed against their grip, his polished composure shattering completely. "Garrett! Tell them! I’m her father! You can't let them do this to me! I made you who you are! You have nothing without my daughter!"

I walked up to him as the officers dragged him backward toward the door.

I looked into the eyes of the man who had pretended to welcome me into his family, the man who had hugged me at my wedding while plotting to steal his daughter's future.

"You're right about one thing, Richard," I said quietly. "Sophia is everything to me. And you are nothing."

May you like

The officers hauled him into the hallway, his desperate screams fading down the corridor until the heavy fire doors shut him out forever.
