Chapter 8 - Awakening

Both of us turned.

Sophia’s chest rose sharply. Her eyes—clouded with sedation, swollen with dark hematomas—cracked open.

Her gaze drifted past the ceiling, past the IV stands, until it landed on me.

"Gar... rett..."

The word was barely a breath, garbled by the dryness in her throat and the trauma of her crushed larynx, but it was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard in my life.

I lowered the weapon, keeping it aimed at the floor, and took two strides to her side. I grabbed her right hand with both of mine.

"I'm here, Soph. I'm right here. You're safe."

Her fingers tightened around mine with surprising strength. Tears pooled in the corners of her bruised eyes, carving clean paths through the dried blood on her cheeks.

Then she saw Richard standing behind me.

Her heart monitor, which had just been reconnected to the wall display, suddenly spiked.

*BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP.*

Her eyes widened in sheer, visceral terror. Her body began to tremble, her heels kicking weakly against the mattress.

"N-No..." she choked out, her voice rising in panic. "No... please... don't let him..."

"Look at me, Sophia!" I commanded gently, leaning down so my face blocked her view of Richard. "Look at my eyes. He will never touch you again. I swear to God on my life, he is done."

Richard took a slow step toward the door. "Sophia, sweetheart, Daddy is here. I'm taking care of everything—"

"Get out!" she screamed, the effort tearing at her vocal cords. "You... you held me down! You told him... you told him to break my fingers if I didn't sign!"

I felt a cold rage settle into my bones, freezing out every trace of mercy.

Samuel had said he heard two men. The video showed Castiglione using the chair. But Sophia remembered the truth of what happened before the camera started rolling. Richard hadn't just watched. He had participated.

I didn't yell. I didn't lose control.

I turned back to Richard. He had already reached the door handle, his hand slick with sweat.

May you like

Before he could turn it, the door was kicked open from the outside with tremendous force.
