Chapter 7 - The Web of Debt

The fourth floor of Mercy General was completely quiet when the elevator doors chimed open. Too quiet.

The nurses' station, usually bustling with chart updates and medication prep, was occupied by only one woman—the nurse who had called me. Her name tag read *Bradley*. Her hands shook as she typed on a keyboard.

Down the hall, outside Sophia’s room, two men in identical charcoal suits stood with their hands crossed over their waists. They weren't hospital security; their postures were rigid, eyes scanning the exits with professional paranoia.

I didn't slow down. I walked straight down the center of the hall, my boots echoing off the walls.

"Sir, visiting hours are over," the first guard said, stepping into my path and placing a broad hand against my chest.

I caught his wrist, twisted it inward ninety degrees, and drove my elbow directly into his sternum. The air exploded from his lungs with a wet wheeze as he collapsed to his knees. Before the second guard could reach inside his jacket, I grabbed the back of the first man’s collar, shoved him into his partner, and slammed both of them back-first into the wall.

The second guard reached for a concealed pistol. I pinned his gun hand against his hip, drove my thumb into the nerve junction under his ear, and drove his skull hard against the drywall.

He slid down the wall, out cold.

I pushed open the door to ICU Room 4.

Richard was inside. He was standing over Sophia’s bed with an older, balding man in a white lab coat who was preparing a syringe filled with clear fluid.

Sophia was disconnected from her primary monitors. A mobile transport gurney sat beside her bed, straps unbuckled.

"Get away from her," I said.

The doctor froze, the needle hovering inches from Sophia’s central IV line.

Richard spun around, his face draining of color. "Garrett! What are you doing? This is a private medical team! She needs specialized neuro-rehabilitation in Boston—"

"Shut up," I said, drawing my pistol and pointing it directly between Richard’s eyes.

The silence that followed was deafening. The doctor slowly raised his hands, dropping the syringe onto the linoleum floor.

"Garrett, put the gun down," Richard stammered, raising his trembling palms. "You’ve lost your mind. If you pull that trigger, your life is over."

"My life ended the moment I saw that video, Richard."

Richard’s mouth fell open. "What... what video?"

"The camera in the pantry," I said, stepping closer until the steel muzzle of my gun was resting against the bridge of his nose. "Castiglione broke her ribs with an oak chair while you stood by the fridge, asking for her signature. You brought a mob debt collector into my home."

Richard’s knees gave out slightly, his back hitting the wall. "Garrett... you don't understand the people I was dealing with. They threatened to kill me! They were going to butcher Sophia and leave her in pieces if I didn't pay!"

"So you decided to butcher her yourself?"

"I was trying to save us all!" Richard cried, tears of pure cowardice finally spilling down his cheeks. "If she had just signed the trust release, Castiglione would have walked away! She was stubborn! She wouldn't listen!"

"She was protecting this family from a thief," I snarled.

On the bed, a sudden sound cut through the confrontation.

A ragged, choking gasp.
