Chapter 8 - Shadows at the Gates

Night fell over the Hudson River like a shroud of black velvet. A thick, icy fog rolled across the estate's sprawling grounds, swallowing the manicured hedges and stone pathways in mist.
Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was serene. Lucy had fallen asleep hours ago in the massive canopy bed of the east wing guest suite, clutching a stuffed brown bear that Nicholas had instructed Arthur to buy. Maria was asleep on the adjacent chaise lounge, exhausted from the emotional whiplash of the past two days.
At 2:00 AM, Nicholas was still awake in his study, reviewing surveillance feeds on a series of hidden monitors mounted behind a wooden bookshelf.
Suddenly, monitor number four flickered and went black.
Nicholas’s eyes narrowed instantly. Monitor four covered the eastern perimeter fence—the blind spot near the old carriage house.
Seconds later, monitor six went dark.
Nicholas didn't panic. He calmly reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a custom matte-black Sig Sauer 9mm, clicked off the safety, and pressed the silent alarm beneath his desk.
The red emergency indicator blinked silently on his desk console.
Marco appeared at the study door like a phantom, already wearing tactical body armor, an automatic rifle held tight against his chest.
“Perimeter breach, boss,” Marco whispered urgently. “Six hostiles slipped past the eastern gate. They cut the hardwire feed to the external cameras. They’re moving fast toward the residential wings.”
Nicholas stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. His eyes had turned completely predatory. “Who are they?”
“Not regular street thugs,” Marco muttered. “Coordinated movement. Suppressed weapons. Looks like ex-military contractors. Hart’s private payroll.”
Nicholas’s blood turned to ice. “They aren't here for me.”
Marco’s eyes widened as the realization hit him. “The east wing. They’re going after the girl.”
Vivienne and Marcus knew they couldn't defeat Nicholas in an open gang war. But if they abducted Lucy and Maria, they would have the ultimate bargaining chip to force Nicholas into submission, reclaim their ports, and humiliate him.
“Kill every single one of them,” Nicholas said, his voice flat, emotionless, and terrifyingly cold. “Leave one alive for questioning. If a single stray round enters the east wing, I will personally flay whoever fired it.”
“On it,” Marco grunted, turning toward the corridor.
Nicholas racked the slide of his handgun and headed straight for the east wing.
He moved silently through the grand marble hallways, his leather-soled shoes making no sound against the Persian carpets. Up ahead, near the entrance to the guest wing, a shadow shifted behind a decorative marble pillar.
A man in black tactical gear and a balaclava stepped out, raising a suppressed submachine gun.
Before the intruder could align his sights, Nicholas fired twice.
Two muffled cracks echoed through the hallway. The first bullet struck the man’s shoulder; the second took him through the throat. The intruder collapsed against the marble wall, sliding down into a pooling shadow of blood without making a sound.
Nicholas stepped over the body, his gun raised, his senses dialed to an razor-sharp edge.

From inside the guest room, a terrified scream pierced the silence.
It was Maria.
