Chapter 11 - The Shadow Returns

Three hours later, high in the misty pine forests of the Catskill Mountains, a secluded luxury cabin burned against the black night sky.

Local fire crews and state police would later report an accidental propane explosion that leveled the private estate to ash. No bodies were recovered, but the Hart family’s influence over New York City had been completely eradicated before sunrise. Marcus Hart had boarded an emergency flight to Switzerland under an assumed name, ruined, disgraced, and stripped of every asset he owned.

Vivienne Hart was gone. The emerald-cut engagement ring sat once again inside Nicholas’s pocket, heavy and cold.

By 6:00 AM, Nicholas returned to his mansion.

The morning sun was just beginning to break through the gray clouds, casting long, golden beams across the estate’s grand lawn. The air smelled of rain, pine, and fresh dew.

Nicholas walked quietly up the grand staircase and pushed open the heavy wooden doors to his master suite.

Inside, the scene was entirely peaceful.

The massive king-sized bed was bathed in soft morning light. Lucy was curled up on her side, fast asleep, clutching her stuffed bear with her tiny, bandaged wrist resting safely against the plush duvet. Maria sat in an armchair beside the bed, watching over her daughter, but her eyes were heavy with slumber.

When Maria saw Nicholas enter, she immediately stood up, looking at him with immense relief.

“Mr. Moretti... you’re back,” she whispered.

Nicholas took off his overcoat, revealing a clean white shirt. There was no trace of the violence from the night before; he had washed his hands and cleared his mind before stepping foot into the room.

“It’s over, Maria,” Nicholas said gently, his voice soft so as not to wake the child. “The Harts are gone. They will never touch you, Lucy, or this house ever again.”

Maria let out a long, ragged breath, and tears of overwhelming relief spilled down her cheeks. “I don't know how to thank you. We have nothing to give you.”

“You gave me this,” Nicholas said, gesturing toward the sleeping child. “You brought life into a house that was dead for twenty years.”

He walked to the side of the bed and gently pulled the soft duvet up over Lucy’s small shoulders. The little girl stirred slightly in her sleep, a faint, sweet smile touching her lips as she mumbled something about vanilla cookies.

Nicholas felt a profound sense of purpose settle deep in his soul. For the first time in his dangerous, blood-soaked life, he knew what it felt like to have a family to protect. He wasn't just a boss anymore. He was a guardian.

Maria smiled warmly through her tears, stepping closer. “She loves you, you know. She really thinks you’re a superhero.”

Nicholas gave a faint, self-deprecating chuckle. “I’m far from a hero, Maria. But I will keep her safe.”

Suddenly, the peaceful silence was shattered.

A tiny, sharp red laser dot appeared on the white wall just behind Lucy’s head.

Nicholas froze, his combat instincts igniting instantly.

Before he could scream for them to get down, the massive, shatterproof master bedroom window exploded inward in a shower of deadly crystal shards. A high-caliber sniper round tore through the headboard, inches from where Lucy was sleeping.

The estate's perimeter alarm sirens began blaring with an ear-splitting howl across the grounds.

Lucy woke up screaming in raw terror as plaster and dust rained down over the bed. Maria shrieked, diving over her daughter to shield her body.

Nicholas drew his weapon, dragging Maria and Lucy off the bed and down onto the floor behind the solid oak bedframe just as a second bullet shattered the mirror on the wall.

Across the room, Nicholas’s private satellite phone on the nightstand began buzzing violently.

Nicholas lunged, grabbed the phone, and brought it to his ear while keeping his body pressed over Maria and Lucy.

“Who is this?” Nicholas growled, his heart slamming against his ribs.

A raspy, distorted mechanical voice whispered through the receiver, sending a chill straight down his spine:

*“Did you really think Vivienne acted alone, Nicholas? The Harts were just the bait. Check your security cameras. We have your entire compound surrounded... and we aren't leaving without the girl.”*

May you like

The line went dead.

Nicholas looked down at Lucy, whose terrified hazel eyes were locked onto his, crying silently in the dark as gunfire erupted from the lower floor of the mansion.
