Chapter 1 - The Cookie and the Bruise

“Uncle Nicholas, I only ate one cookie.”

The trembling voice stopped Nicholas Caruso in his marble foyer.

“Please don't make me leave.”

A three-year-old girl in a yellow dress ran toward him, wrapped her tiny arms around his leg, and burst into tears.

Chocolate stained her fingers.

One sock hung loose.

Behind her sat a battered suitcase.

Her mother, Maria Santos, knelt beside it in her wrinkled housekeeper's uniform, silently crying.

Nicholas was forty-one, the most feared mafia boss in New York.

Men twice his size lowered their eyes when he entered a room.

But this little girl was clinging to him as though he were her only protection.

“Darling, you're home early.”

His fiancée, Vivienne Hart, stood near the staircase in an expensive ivory dress.

Her expression was cold.

Nicholas ignored her.

He knelt before Lucy.

“Sweetheart, who's making you leave?”

“The pretty lady.”

“Why?”

Lucy's lips trembled.

“Because I ate a cookie.”

Nicholas glanced toward Vivienne.

“One cookie?”

Lucy nodded desperately.

“Only half. I saved the other half for Mommy.”

Nicholas looked at Maria.

She lowered her head.

Something about her silence disturbed him.

Four months earlier, he'd hired Maria and allowed Lucy to stay in the staff wing because Maria couldn't afford childcare.

Now their belongings were packed.

And his elderly butler, Arthur, stood nearby with his jaw clenched.

“Maria,” Nicholas said quietly. “Did someone order you to leave?”

Before she could answer, Vivienne stepped forward.

“Nicholas, don't encourage this nonsense. The child needs discipline.”

Lucy immediately shrank against him.

Nicholas noticed.

He gently reached for her hand.

She flinched.

Then he saw them.

Four angry red marks curved around her tiny wrist.

Adult finger marks.

His entire expression changed.

“Lucy,” he whispered, “who grabbed you?”

The little girl looked toward Vivienne.

Maria began trembling.

“Nicholas, please,” she whispered. “We can leave. Just let us go.”

Vivienne folded her arms.

“Oh, for heaven's sake. She's being dramatic.”

Nicholas slowly stood.

The entire household fell silent.

He had spent twenty years making dangerous men fear his anger.

But nobody in that mansion had ever seen him look quite like this.

May you like

He turned toward Vivienne.

“Tell me exactly what you did to that child.”
