Chapter 7 - The Fortress of Willow Creek

Willow Creek was a sprawling sixty-acre estate nestled in the rolling hills of Westchester County. My father had bought it twenty years ago as a private retreat from the corporate warfare of Manhattan. It had high stone walls, wrought-iron security gates, and a standalone security lodge.

When Daniel and I arrived, the wrought-iron gates were wide open.

As we drove up the long, winding cobblestone driveway lined with ancient oaks, thick plumes of black smoke were already rising into the afternoon sky from behind the main Georgian mansion.

"She’s burning it," Daniel muttered, gripping the steering wheel tight. "The backyard incinerator."

We rounded the final turn and screeched to a halt on the circular gravel drive. Parked near the front portico was Richard’s silver Porsche and a black Mercedes SUV with tinted windows.

Richard was standing on the front steps, violently arguing with a tall, heavyset man in a black trench coat. When Richard saw our vehicle, his jaw dropped in sheer disbelief.

"Clara?!" he shouted as I slammed my car door shut and marched toward the steps. "Are you insane?! You can't be here!"

"Where is she, Richard?" I demanded, my voice cutting through the chill afternoon air like a whip.

"Clara, get back in the car and leave!" Richard lunged down the stairs, grabbing my arm. "Victoria brought professional cleaners. They killed Mercer! Do you understand? They killed him! If she sees you here, you won't leave this property alive!"

I jerked my arm free from his grasp with such force that he stumbled back. "You cowardly parasite. You knew she murdered my father, and you spent eighteen months extorting her while sleeping with Emily in my father’s houses!"

"I was trying to survive!" Richard screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Victoria had leverage! She had forged wire transfers showing I bought the digitalis from a dark-web vendor! She told me if I didn't marry Emily and push you out of the trust, she would give the dossier to the Attorney General!"

"You didn't do it to survive, Richard," I said, stepping into his face, my eyes burning with disgust. "You did it because you wanted the crown. You wanted to be Robert Scott without having to earn it."

"How touching," a sharp, melodic voice echoed from the grand double doors of the mansion.

Victoria stepped out onto the veranda.

She was dressed in a pristine cream cashmere coat, her golden hair swept back in an elegant chignon, holding a vintage crystal glass filled with amber scotch. Behind her stood Emily, looking pale, terrified, and utterly broken. Behind them both were two men with unsmiling faces, their hands resting noticeably inside their heavy jackets.

"I must admit, Clara," Victoria said, taking a delicate sip from her glass. "I underestimated your stubbornness. I thought losing your husband to your sister would send you weeping to a clinic in Switzerland. Instead, you've caused an extraordinary amount of paperwork."

"The game is over, Victoria," I said, holding up the bloody flash drive for her to see. "Mercer didn't wipe the off-site server. I have the mass spectrometry records. I have the uncorrupted toxicology panels showing the synthetic cardiac glycoside. The FBI already has the warrants."

Victoria didn't flinch. She smiled—a slow, predatory smile that sent a shiver straight down my spine.

"A flash drive?" she chuckled softly. "My dear, naive girl. In this country, digital files without a chain of custody are just pixels. The physical blood samples, the medical logs, the private prescriptions... they're currently turning into ash in the incinerator out back. By sunset, there won't be a single molecule of evidence connecting me to Robert's heart attack."

She glanced at the two armed men beside her.

"Take the flash drive from her," Victoria commanded softly. "And make sure neither Clara nor Mr. Ross leaves Westchester County."
