Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Web

By noon, the business world was in an uproar. *Bloomberg* and *The Wall Street Journal* ran breaking alerts detailing the sudden ousting of Richard Vance from Scott Global. Stock prices dipped initially, then rebounded sharply when Daniel Ross released a public statement reassuring the markets that the founding family was resuming executive oversight.

Inside the quiet sanctuary of the executive boardroom, Daniel dropped three heavy black binders onto the conference table with a dull thud.

"We ran the forensic sweep across the frozen domestic and Cayman entities," Daniel said, loosening his crimson tie. His eyes were shadowed with exhaustion. "Clara, Richard wasn't just having an affair. He’s been moving liquid capital out of the company for eighteen months."

I picked up the first ledger. "Eighteen months? That goes back to..."

"To the month before your father passed," Daniel confirmed grimly. "Every two weeks, an automated transfer of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars left an auxiliary shell company registered under Richard’s personal LLC. Destination: an encrypted private trust in Zurich."

I flipped through the pages, seeing the repetitive, rhythmic drain of Scott family funds. "What was the justification on the books?"

"Consulting fees for international expansion. Completely fabricated invoices signed off by Richard and rubber-stamped by Emily in corporate compliance." Daniel leaned forward, his hands flat on the mahogany. "Clara, a man siphoning money to prepare for a divorce takes a lump sum and runs. Richard was paying a recurring subscription. Like hush money."

A knot twisted tightly in my gut. I remembered Richard’s parting words from that morning: *You just cut off the life support.*

"Who was receiving the funds on the Swiss end?" I asked, my heart beginning to hammer.

"The account is shielded by Swiss privacy laws, but our forensic accountant managed to track the wire origin verification code," Daniel said, sliding a single printed sheet toward me. "The receiving entity is registered under the name 'Asclepius Holdings'. Does that name mean anything to you?"

"Asclepius... the Greek god of medicine," I muttered, staring at the sterile black ink. "No. Nothing."

Before Daniel could respond, my personal phone rang on the table. The caller ID flashed with a name I had dreaded seeing all morning: *Victoria Reed*.

My stepmother.

I stared at the screen as it vibrated against the wood. Victoria had married my father seven years ago, bringing along her spoiled, ambitious daughter Emily. To the public, Victoria was the grieving, elegant philanthropist who spent her widowhood in Palm Beach. In reality, she was a predator who had spent seven years trying to wedge herself between my father and me.

I pressed speaker. "Victoria."

"Clara Elise Scott," Victoria’s voice purred through the speaker, ice-cold and dripping with venom. "I just received a hysterical phone call from Emily. She claims security humiliated her and threw her into the street like common trash."

"Your daughter committed corporate theft and gross misconduct with my husband," I replied evenly. "She should be grateful I didn't have her led out in handcuffs."

"You insolent little brat," Victoria hissed, dropping all pretense of maternal elegance. "You think because Robert gave you the majority shares you rule this world? You undo that freeze on Emily’s accounts immediately, and you reinstate Richard by the close of business."

"Or what, Victoria? You'll sue me? Every contract Richard signed has an ironclad morality clause. You have no legal standing."

Victoria let out a low, unsettling laugh that raised the hairs on the back of my neck. "You really are your father's daughter. Arrogant. Blind. You think you hold all the cards, Clara. But you have no idea what Robert did to protect you. Call off the dogs, Clara, or you will tear open a grave you cannot bear to look inside."

The line went dead.

I looked up at Daniel. His face was entirely pale.

"She's not talking about money, Daniel," I whispered, the cold reality settling in like frost. "What did Richard mean this morning? What did Victoria just mean?"

May you like

Daniel hesitated, his jaw clenching. "Clara... there's something else. In Richard's voicemails. The ones you refused to listen to this morning."

My hand trembled slightly as I reached into my purse for my phone.
